ARTICLE: Find your car's date of manufacture (VIN)

Guys,

A friend has booked Vento Diesel HL. He recd the VIN number from the Dealer but wants to make sure its a 2013 car.

EDIT : From the instructions mentioned on Page 1, worked out car was manufactured in Jan 2013. Just want to make sure i got it right.

This should be correct. Most manufacturers (at least the sales executive at the dealerships) maintain it as Chassis Number rather than as VIN. At least three of them (not of Maruti) had corrected me that there is no VIN, but Chassis Number! The Swift's should be a 17 digit number like MA3EHKD1S00331723 and MA3FHEB1S00259646 (both VINs are of the Swift taken from previous pages of this thread).

Looking at the VIN for my Jetta to be delivered tomorrow, I can make out that it was manufactured in Oct '12 and is a 2013 model. Is this correct?
I'm not sure where it was manufactured though. Any help would be great.

Happened to visit the Dealer to see the car which I had booked. The car is due for delivery next week on 26th April 2013.

VIN - MA3FDEB1S00437937*AD

Maruti Ritz VDI

If I decode it, guess it is Jan 2013 Manufactured.

Am i correct.

Thanks again for this brilliant thread, i could easily decode my brand new XUV 500's VIN and happy to know that i got March 2013 manufactured one and not from some old stock

I was worried as i didn't have much time to get the VIN before the delivery from the dealer.
