hello,
is there any HU in the market with HDMI input in the front that can play videos too. Are these HU available in India? what would be the cost?
Mods: if thread already exists please delete or merge with the same.
Nope. Not even a single one of them...
You can achive this via:
1. Very small Car PC to play video and to send audio via SPDIF to head unit (or sound processor) that accepts digital inputs. This Car PC would not be much larger then a cell phone.
3. 1-DIN Sound processor that accepts digital inputs (so that you don't have to deal with 5 cables for audio)
Examples are :
Trim-Slice | cool in more than one way (Car PC that is just 0.6 inch thick)
Alpine's PXA-H701 (Sound processor with digital inputs)
Since the main function of HDMI, even if one is available, would be to *output* the signal from the DVD player in the HU (assuming 5.1 decoding is available in the HU) to a TV/Monitor. HDMI input would have no use, as the HU is neither a switching unit for an external player, nor is the HU an HD recorder.
Don't agree with that.
HDMI input is just like "audio-in". Instead of low-voltage Analogue audio it would send 5.1 digital audio to HU.
For example, lots of cell phones now have HDMI out. Android tablet that I have has HDMI out. Would be nice to be able to send high quality audio to HU via HDMI from these devices.
Since you require HDMI input, I am assuming you want a LCD screen that accepts HDMI signals. There are LCD screens that do that. But you want something that can play the audio well too. As said a carpc would be one of the things that you require.
Once windows will become mainstream on ARM, there will be lot of options for low powered car pcs
I have an LCD with HDMI input. Picture quality is the SAME with VGA on it mate.

Absolutely correct, @netfreakbombay. Just that
1. There are always 2 ends to that interface, a source and a sink end, and
2. @Mr.Bangalore wanted to play video through the HDMI interface, so an assumption has to be made that the HU is a DVD player
3. @frankmehta has confirmed that external LCDs/Touchscreens are good enough only for normal viewing, not HD viewing, when played through HDMI
I think Mr.Bangalore needs to give a bit more detail what exactly he wanted to achieve.
Ad DerAlte mentioned, OP needs to clarify what he is trying to achieve. We can find workarounds based on that.
