I would suggest you go for the Pioneer because you would have great tuning capabilities built within. To get the same from Alpine you would have to spend extra in an Imprint Kit. Moreover buy a Ipod cable for pioneer because that works much better than USB.

Re: alpine 117 VS pioneer P80rs2

I am in the same boat as you.

I do not use TA and not bothered about the bluetooth that much, so I can save on the imprint kit.

Although, I have heard that USB stick does not work perfectly through the adapter on P80, it owuld not display the full filenames (5 chars is the limit, i think).
Its better to go for an iPod.

BTW, what are the prices you have been offered on both of them?

Most of the people are going to suggest P80 to you.

I really like P80, but I want a 117 for its native USB support.

If you are going to use USB most times, the 117 makes sense. The USB adapter in P80 wont be great.

It show 8 characters and then scrolling starts with a touch of a button. But the interface is a pain and slow. But I have used the p80 with IPOD and I loved the interface. Very good. Highly recommend.

Also before buying listen to both the heads do not go buy recommendations here on the forum. The person owning the head will always say it is better. It is better you trust your ears rather than others advice !!!

117 makes sense if you are going to use USB and not iPod. If you have an iPod and plan to buy iPod Adapter for P80 then you can go for P80 too.

Both the HU's will do just fine and are equally good.

Re: Alpine 117 vs Pioneer P80rs2

Forgot to mention that the 117 does not use USB like most HU's, it uses a method called banking. The "Banking" will be a problem if you plan to use high capacity USB drives. IMO the HU is great with the Ipod.

Why dont you look at other options?

I have not tried the alpine 117. So cannot coment further on the same. But if you go with Pioneer you will be happy. As many on this forum replaced there 9887 with a P80 soon or latter !!!

Re: Alpine 117 vs Pioneer P80rs2

Dear pro

I have the DEH-P88RS, it is the european spec version of the p80.

Currently it is playing in my dad's octavia with a cd-ub100 (usb adapter)

Works flawlessly, absolutely no complaints on SQ or even the operation of the unit. It has a very simple interface for tuning. Even a beginner will feel at home depending on his understanding of the operations.

Also it works for my dad at this level. Since he just connects a pen-drive with loads of his ghazals or old hindi songs.

Another neat trick this HU has up its sleeve is that the audio settings and yout TA settings remain on the HU for a considerable time even after you disconnect it from the battery. Although saved radio stations and some setting will be lost.

My cribs are as follows:

1) No inherent support for USB. You will need the USB adapter - CD-UB100.

2) The USB adapter does not read wav/ flac or any lossless formats. It reads only mp3s/ wma and limited files. But the HU will read cds consisting of wav files, even made by you.

3) The aux input is located to the rear. I have routed a wire from the same to the glove box.

4) The USB adapter does not display full text info of the files.

5) The USB adapter will accept only FAT format. NTFS will not be read.

If your primary source is going to be USB and you are able to stretch your budget then look at the P99rs. People actross the globe have been going ga ga over it. It reads wav files off USB drives and supports ipods also inherently.

I had auditioned a 117 quite sometime ago and found it too coloured for my liking. Although as LBM sir has mentioned elsewhere, tuning both these will yield you similar results.

That's my 2 cents mate. Hope your dilemma is cleared soon and you find a suitable HU.

Do post your review of the selected product.

PS: Forgot to mention, you can add a steering mounted remote (IR) and it works superbly. Must have party trick @ around 1~1.5k.

Hi

Could you please elaborate on the 117. How does it compare to P80RSII?
