I don't know models but there are a lot of 2-Din Pioneer and Alpine models that i've seen which are very attractive. They have touch-screen panels,DVD playback, etc..But, 30k is a small budget for a 2Din setup.

Your budget seems fine. You will be able to buy a 2 din head unit with speakers and may be even a small amp.

Pioneer, kenwood and alpine make double din head units. Suggest you log on to their sites and have a look.

Hey Nitrous... do you have any assesment of the OE head unit in an Elantra?

I have to admit I dont know anythiing about car-audio... but am a sound buff though. Hence my assumptions on budget was ..

Speakers - 8- 10 K (both front and rear)

AMP : 10 K

Head Unit 10 -12k

Sub - 7.5 k (have seen an "in the boot" kind of model with cabinet and all - forget the name) This is avoidfable if the speakers themselves have good bass reproduction - (THIS IS A FAMILY CAR!)

Pls give me an education!

Most 2 DIN units are not as good as 1 DIN units but offer the advantage of tape and CD playback.

Unless this is essential I would suggest a 1 DIN HU. There are Kits available to convert yuor 2 DIN slot to a 1 DIN slot.

see

Alpine and Pioneer make good 2 DIN units. The Alpine looks more sedate. It is the system sold with the NHC Vtec.

Sony ,JVC and Kenwod also have 2 DIN models.

I'd look at an Alpine/Blaupunkt/JBL in your budget. I dont think Infinity, Hertz, etc. will fit.

Whoops... will go thru those sites...

I am okay with a 1Din so long as there are no ungainly holes... Tell me ... can I get a super head unit which can make enough music out of 4 speakers (and two tweets that come with the car - are they any good??) ... Not looking for sound to precede me - yet has to be loud enought to head-bang every now and then!

to head bang you will need an amp. the speakers supplied by most OEMs are not the best.

there are 2 options.

HU: 10K like the Blaupunkt (forget model)
Amp: 9K like the JBL 60.4
Speakers: rear 6x9 and front 5-6" components: 10K like JBL 936 and 606.

or

HU: 9K with 3 pre outs
Amps: 12K one JBL 60.4 and Sony 502.
Spekers: rear 6" coax, front 5-6" components: 9K JBL 606 and 636
Sub: 12" tube 6.5K JBl 1200T

JBL and Blaupunkt make similarly priced products so it would make sense checking out atleast these 2 brands for amps and speakers. Mate these to a Pioneer, Sony or Blaupunkt HU and you should be ok. Only please make sure you get everything will Bill and Warranty.
