Please add volume for bracing and also the displacement of the subwoofer. I'd look at 1.2 cu. ft. to get 1 cu. ft. net.

Yes the subwoofer will have adequate room with 1.5" on either side.

Thanks a lot for pointing the correction, Iam calling the dealer and getting started today itself.

Going to carpenter in a few hours.

The wiring kit for amp is quoted at Rs.2400 JBL
Rs.500. Boss

Thanks again.

Re: Need help deciding on a JVC Subwoofer and Amplifier

Went to the carpenter and explained him the box dimensions
surprisingly he knew about the sealing, he said I'll make good "puteen" paste made by mixing Favicon and wood saw dust, seems "DerAlte" given tip was known to this box maker.

I insisted and asked if he seals every box, but he said only a couple of them in last few years and most boxes he made were ported ones and they even neglected it for being oversized to prevent wastage of MDF panels.

As JVC subwoofer is scheduled to reach my town in next 4-5 days, I am inclined towards JBL subwoofer.

Here's a few pics for subwoofer I am planning to install.

A good cabinet maker should know such tricks. This is an old trick to prevent expansion cracks between panels through which insects could enter.

The 'preventing wastage of MDF panels' is another simple-minded folly of carpenters. Of course they don't have a clue about box size calculated from the T-S parameters of a sub. Instead, if they cut a 6x3 panel in half length-wise, they get an 18" width, which then becomes a convenient dimension to use without further cutting-shutting!!!

Even I think you should go for the JBL sub. JVC, though not incompetent, is not a speaker-specialist, so that would make a difference.

Thanks, JBL is final indeed,
the box should be ready by now, however I think favicol should be allowed 24 hours to dry, however the carpenter says its useable in 4-6 hours, but I don't want to mess with its sealing.

I might get the amp and wiring installed this evening and will wait for the subwoofer to dry till saturday afternoon and then have it installed.

will keep this thread updated if Amp is installed today.

Re: Need help deciding on a JVC Subwoofer and Amplifier

Thanks to all Team-bhp members, for showing me the ray of light for my small ICE upgrade, I've successfully installed a 12 inch JBL subwoofer in my car.

However the installation of Amp and wiring is not at all satisfactory, had I had slightest idea of what kinda work these local guys would do I would have postponed the install itself.
Had an little idea so downgraded my choice of Wiring kit to BOSS instead of JBL.

I was in full mood to capture all pics, but it was dusk by the time woofer box was ready, so was able to click only few initial pics.

The AMP is located under from passenger seat and is NOT fixed using screws.

The setup initially sounded like a low cost roadside band, the friendly dealer dude was stating its ok system as you have sealed box but i knew there's more to tune and this will certainly improve.

Once I came back home, had a tea, relaxed a hour and then off to garage, within 5-10 minutes, keeping in mind T-BHP ICE Tuning posts I read earlier, I was able to tune it to perfection levels for my ears, atleast.

Lows are Tight and Punchy as I wanted even on low volumes.

On Higher volumes, my rear view mirror cannot show a human readable image.
with windows rolled up and bass and beat song like "tinku jiya" feels like my heart is working hard to keep up, Remaining hair on my semi bald head feels like wanna come out and fall on car floor mat.
my backrest on driver seats feels it would either conk off its support, or it would eject me from the car like Jet Pilots do just before the crash.

This upgraded setup consists of :-
A 2 Channel JVC Amplifier KS-AX3102
A 12 inch JBL SubwooferGT5-S12
Low Cost BOSS Wiring KIT
Most Important A Custom Sealer MDF BOX which was built using expert suggestion of Navin Ji and DerAlte.
Without the help from Team-BHP ICE experts I would never imagined of having a subwoofer in my car, however it took me few years to start loving good music in car too.

Before this part of life I had a very mentally and physically exhaustive online business which I sold in sep-2011 and now I had less things to worry about and can easily drive in good mood and think about next venture.

Lastly I would be getting the car floor carpet removed and washed this Sunday, Its dirty as hell, as I need to get car seats removed to get it off the car, once this is washed and dried, I would re-install the AMP and this would give two benefits
1). Cleaner and healthy car.
2). Implement my D.I.Y. stuff to Amp Placement.
3). Organize the Cable Mess.

Thanks again for tolerating me with very basic questions and helping me with every step in making a custom subwoofer box.

Enjoy the pics.

Navin Ji and DerAlte Bada wala Thank you hai ji.

Changed the placement now,
Need help deciding on a JVC Subwoofer and Amplifier-6obht.jpg

but need to get two things on priority
A Grill, will a Steel pipe kinda thing work, or it should be a full grill, any pic to see what suits best for such heavy subwoofer ?

and velcrow Band to make it tied to one place, its not moving but just in case it moves on heavy bumps. Roads in my town is all dugged up, its like driving in desert with dust and yellow mud.

on a side note
(Team-bhp attachment image upload is not working if you try to upload from your localdisk.)

Re: Need help deciding on a JVC Subwoofer and Amplifier

Another update.
24 hours since AMP was installed and not more than 1-2 hours of tuning etc, I Called the installer and asked him to give me two minutes and check if the tuning done by me sounds good, I knew he would be surprised once he experiences the sound, It was a call to let him know the capabilities of even basic AMP and precise MDF BOX for subwoofer.

He met me on way to somewhere and we played a few songs, he had a Jaw dropping experience, LOL

Also checked all units and was asking if anything extra has been installed,
as he's a friendly guy, he was very keen to learn how to tune the amp to get this perfection, he would be a member of team-bhp very soon.

He's even ready to visit me at home along his own car and do some tuning experiments, LOL

I confessed that my HU and set up is not a expensive one but sounds good and most important thing is I am Extremely happy with the output.

His final comments were, I've been installing Amp since last 4-5 years but haven't seen such a precise, Solid, tight clear output even with more expensive HU in this town. This is Amazing.

Once again credit goes to Team-BHP as I am a novice user and didn't had any idea what I am going to get, can a car ICE system sound so good, to sum up with expert advice of Navin Ji and Deralte, also the existing thread about tuning basics and pro settings are like secret books of CAR ICE.

Long Live Team-bhp.

There is a readymade one which has approx. 1cm square hole grid all over, painted black. Fairly common with PA system speakers.

DA those grills are horrendous but I guess those are the only ones readily available. I normally get something fabicated out of perforated steel plate (used for screening of flour etc..) or wire mesh whichever is easier to find.

I agree. He is in Allahabad, so his choices may be limited. Alternatively, if there is a steel / brass stamping industry where he can find some stainless steel or brass scrap, he could get something fabricated out of that. If wants something with flair, he could get some thick acrylic sheet (10mm or so) cut artistically and mounted with spacers, and mount some blue LEDs around the periphery (@ghpk is the LED champ here).

"Tinku jiya"??? Hmmm... had that song somewhere in my collection!

One available grill is black plastic one, which will certainly not fit well, also is ugly looking.

He he you are one smart man who can understand the DIY itch,
Allahabad is certainly very limited for ready made stuff which would fit my requirement.
the Acrylic sheet idea rocks, Let me hunt for this in coming days,
I know a few metal fabricators around but steel rods would be thing from different planet for them, they have those metal Angle's, rods, saria(not able to recall its english name), but will check.

Currently have to finish account work on priority else my C.A. gonna hit me real hard.

Its a great idea to have gone for the JBL subwoofer, I always felt JBL has that little extra bright bass. JVC would not have done justice to your setup, I am a big fan of JVC headunits, but the speakers are not that exciting.
I also strongly advise you to get a grill fitted as soon as possible, as I was myself the victim of a damaged cone, and trust me it hurts.
