This is true. I opened up the front grill (rear is pretty much the same) and removed the speaker and took some measurements as follows:

5 1/2" = distance between opposite mounting holes (X4)
5 1/4" = distance between speaker clips in door
4 3/8" = diameter of speaker hole in door
4 1/2" = depth of speaker hole in door

So the 5 1/4" stock speaker is a tight fit and anything larger will need cutting etc. The main constraint being the speaker clips (next to the blue line) that snap on to the speaker.

ICE upgrade : Renault Duster & Nissan Terrano-duster-speaker.jpg

I threw in a pair of 5 1/4" Infinity Kappas in the fronts and the the sound is much better already. May do the same for the rears.

Budget Amp for Renault Duster

Hello gurus,
Just got the delivery of my Duster RXL 85, and did not like the sound quality at all so decided to upgrade the speaker's and shortlisted JBL GTO 509C for front components and JBL CS-5 co-axials for rear.

Is it necessary to add amplifier if yes then which brand should i go for, i want a 4 channel amplifier with good overall sound quality and bass.I don't want to add sub-woofer.

Budget for my amplifier is under 5k.

I just upgraded the speakers alone. I found HU to be good. I would say try it that way before you decide.

The integrated HU also gives you steering control to your phone and ipod. That helps a lot. Hence it gives me less reasons to replace it.

An external amplifier makes the listening experience far better than with internal amp in the HU. 'Necessary' would not be an appropriate expression.

In that budget, you would get a Sony or Pio 4-channel. If you increase the budget slightly, you can get a Kenwood or JBL, both of which are quite good. Please don't forget - wires, cables and installation will also need to be in that budget.

1. Approx. 6K

2. The dealer should be able to get you the 509c

3. Look for Infinity Primus components

Audition the components before you buy.

re: ICE for the Renault Duster & Nissan Terrano

Suggest me some good car audio dealers in Kolkata, can i fix 6.1/2" speakers in duster without compromising the stock grill(original look)
its very hard to find 5.25" components or co-axial as many dealers have 6.1/2".

navin,

I doubt very much if 6.5" can be installed and the stock look retained. Be wary, if installers promised that. they may go hacking away and fail especially with the front speakers, as any cutting may compromise the integrity of the enclosure.

If you want to reatin the head unit there are speaker level to line level converters avaialble that allow connection of an amplifier to a head unit.

re: ICE for the Renault Duster & Nissan Terrano

Hi, am buying a base Duster 85 with no ICE at all.
I want a good 2-din HU with four good speakers. I don't want a subwoofer, but decent bass and clarity. I listen to British rock and jazz, so the bass guitar should be clearly audible and not be mistaken as speaker having come loose!

budget is around 20 K. any suggestions? I will go blindly with that because i will not be able to do much R&D.

20K will be a bit tight - you will have to go a couple of K more.

1. Reliance Autozone is selling a Sony touchscreen 2DIN HU for about 13K or so. They will also install it for free

2. There are JBL 5.25" components and 5.25" coaxes also available there. Components would be ~6K and coaxes around 3K. There would be also Pioneer and Sony speakers there - listen to them by all means, but I have a feeling you will like JBL better

3. When they open the door pads to mount the speakers, ask them to wrap some CC foam around loose wires and cables, and stay them down properly with some good wide tape

Without an external amp and a sub (that will increase your budget by at least 12K), don't expect too much bass guitar coming out of the speakers, but at least the bass guitar will sound like bass guitar. Do carry your own music on CD (audio CD or MP3 tracks) and / or a pendrive to judge the speakers.

PS: Oh, and please don't go blindly. This needs you participation even if you don't do research. Your ears are the best judge!

Hi DerAlte,

Yeah, upping the budget by 2-3 K should be okay because am not gonna buy alloys now. Thanks for your suggestions. I will definitely go and try them out.
Did you mean any particular Reliance Autozone? I can see there's one on HSR layout.

Let's see...waiting for the delivery now.

Being a chain of stores and not a franchisee, all of them will stock the same things. If one doesn't have it in stock, they can always get it from the nearest one.
