Google Android M with inbuilt OS & connectivity for cars - No need for smartphone

The next update to Google’s Android M could embed the operating system to cars, doing away with the need to plug in smartphones for connecting with the internet

This means, every time a driver turns on the ignition, he is connected to the internet and gets access to navigation, music and apps, among other things n Google is not alone in this pursuit.

While Apple unveiled its CarPlay in March, Microsoft is working with automobile players

The search giant has entered into tie-ups with Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai, to bring the Android operating system to cars

Re: Google Android M with inbuilt OS & connectivity for cars - No need for smartphone

No real surprise here, as this seems like the natural progression.

Typical Google though, they haven't properly released Android Auto yet, and there are already rumours of the next step!

For an end user, the cost of an OEM Android Auto vs OEM Android M solution are virtually indistinguishable. The convenience level of Android M is higher though. However, the cost advantage of Android Auto might have been something Google used to rope-in auto manufacturers at the start - as it does make a difference to them.

In other words - what we'll have here is an OEM Android Head Unit. I look forward to it...

Agreed.

Going by how phones have evolved, I would prefer a plain vanilla android M over a manufacturer's laggy "value added" version!!
