Toyota is officially adopting 'SmartDeviceLink' - Ford’s open-source smartphone app interface software. SmartDeviceLink (SDL) is the software on which Ford's SYNC AppLink platform is built. In non-Ford vehicles, SDL offers a similar functionality as SYNC AppLink does in Ford vehicles, and allows accessibility to apps like Spotify, Glympse, iHeartRadio, AccuWeather, MLB and others through voice recognition and dashboard controls.

Automotive suppliers like QNX Software Systems and UIEvolution are also adopting the technology, with plans to integrate it into their products. Manufacturers like PSA Peugeot Citroën, Honda, Subaru and Mazda are also investigating the possibility of adopting this platform. By offering the technology to multiple manufacturers, Ford hopes to bring more conformity to in-car connectivity, enabling developers to reach out to a larger user base.
