Tata Motors partners with what3words - 3 word address for navigation

Tata Motors has partnered with location technology provider what3words to bring the company's addressing system in its cars.

what3words' technology enables drivers to enter a 3 word address by voice or text input and then navigate to the set location. The system is claimed to be accurate to within 3 meters.

The system divides the entire map into 3x3 meter squares and assigns each square a unique identifier made of three random words. For example - Gateway of India can be found at ///holiday.surprises.design. The three words can be entered into the car's navigation system. It also has an AutoSuggest feature.

The system is available in 36 languages, including 5 Indian languages - Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi.

Tata claims that the 3 word addressing system will make last mile navigation simple, safe, hassle-free and less time consuming.

The what3words application is available for free on iOS and Android platforms.

re: Tata Motors partners with what3words - 3 word address for navigation

I just realized about what3words and I found it really innovative and excellent solution to addressing problem.

I am sitting at 'drop.typical.helpers', join me for coffee.

And even I can use Marathi, then it is marathi three words

'Vaativar.aawar.takaamakaa'

I think, wide acceptance of this new standard will make life lot easier. Hats off to Tata Motors to find partner with this innovative concept.

The concept sounds similar to the plus codes in Google Maps

Stuff like this only provides an advantage when you have to go from digital -> verbal -> digital.

Situations like that rarely arise nowadays.

It would have been better paired with MapQuest, circa 2005.

Sure, there is a case to be made for voice navigation in cars, but there's such a high barrier to it being an efficient solution because; firstly, the person at the destination needs to know their what3words, and after that you need to have the voice recognition get it right.

If there was no other easy solution, that might work. However, most people would rather just have someone drop them a pin on Whatsapp or share a Google Maps link.

If someone doesn't have the technological proficiency to do that, there's no way they'd figure out w3w.

Saw a program on CNN just now. They have Mercedes using it already plus ecommerce sites. The names however are so random, it doesn't feel good using them:( Atleast the last word could have been like .Karnataka and .India. It's great as a unique 3 word address anywhere in the world.
