S-Cross ICE. JVC HU, Morel Elate Titanium 603, Helix DSP.3S, Audiofrog sub, Mosconi & Rockford Amps

I had upgraded ICE in December 2020.

Setup:

1. Stock HU (Bosch Touchscreen)
2. Gladen RS 165 G2 Components
3. Gladen Alpha 165 Coaxials
4. Gladen M Line 10 Subwoofer
5. Pioneer GM-A6704 Amplifier
6. All Doors Damping

I was happy with the setup initially, but was not fully satisfied with the clarity at volumes above 20. SQ was not up to the mark. I had got the ICE upgrade in Baleno and that was more clear at higher volumes, thanks to better stock HU and Amplifier. I understood that the stock HU and basic Pioneer amplifier were the limitations in my S-Cross. Hence, I started exploring various options.

I didn't want to spend a lot (Well, lesson learnt is it is too difficult to resist the itch ) and was considering adding DSP or New Amp or New HU. I had almost decided to try the Pioneer DSP, it's very VFM. The reviews were mixed though. I didn't mind spending around 10k just to try it. At the same time, a friend was selling his Rockford Power T600-4 Amplifier. It's a powerful class AB amp delivering 100 WRMS per channel. Amp was in perfect condition and I just decided to buy it .

Many adviced me that good source is important and HU change will improve the SQ. I got convinced as the stock HU doesn't have any additional functions. I could always add a good DSP later, made sense as trying out the Pioneer DSP was a gamble.

I considered these head units in the range of 20-25k

1. JVC KW-M740BT
2. Pioneer DMH-Z5290BT
3. Sony XAV-AX5500
4. Sony XAV-AX7000

Pioneer units were not available easily, no fresh imports. Sony HU's are priced well, got nice UI and capacitive touchscreen. SQ was questionable though, audiophile friends advised me not to go with Sony for SQ improvment. Alpine was the choice, but it's too expensive and availability is very low in India. Next options were JVC and Kenwood. Though they are from same company, sales and service of JVC is much better. I decided to go with KW-M740BT.

I came across another HU from JVC called KW-M960BW. It was priced higher at Rs. 40,000. I was impressed with the specs like 5V Pre-Outs. It also has wireless Android Auto and Carplay. High resolution bluetooth audio streaming is a bonus. UI also looked more friendly compared to 740bt. For sure it is a better HU and I didn't mind spending more.

I had the AMP with me. I called up Muneem and checked the availability for the JVC unit. He got it in a day. I didn't wait further and hit the roads for 500 Km drive to Kochi haha. Many asked me why I drive all the way to Kochi , reason is peace of mind with the installation and I enjoy driving.

EDIT: Gladen speakers replaced with Morel Elate Titanium 603: 3 way components

KW-M960BW vs Bosch OE

1. Much better SQ in JVC
2. Wireless Android Auto and Carplay in JVC
3. All steering controls work with JVC
4. Mute button only mutes the audio in JVC, OE would pause and mute which I miss in new HU
5. Slightly better reverse camera display in OE

Overall, I am very happy with the JVC HU. There is massive difference in SQ and my purpose is met . UI is friendly and smooth. There is no significant lag in any functions. Boot up time is less than 10 seconds. I didn't face any problems using the clear resistive touchscreen, capacitive screen would have been better. I would highly recommend this HU for those looking for SQ and smooth UI.

re: S-Cross ICE Upgrade | JVC Head Unit, Gladen Speakers & Subwoofer and a Rockford Amplifier!

I had installed the speakers and subwoofer along with damping of all doors at Galaxy in December 2020. Only the location of tweeters were changed from stock location to A pillars during the next visit. I also got the Amp changed from Pioneer to Rockford.

Gladen RS 165 G2 Components

Gladen RS 165 G2 is Generation 2 of the RS line with updated materials and design. They are 3 Ohm speakers, rated at 100 WRMS. Gladens have neutral sound signature.

Tweeters mounted on A pillars

S-Cross ICE. JVC HU, Morel Elate Titanium 603, Helix DSP.3S, Audiofrog sub, Mosconi & Rockford Amps-img_20210316_131444.jpg

I find this location better. Installation was neat too.

Gladen Alpha 165 Coaxials

Muneem had suggested me not to upgrade rear speakers as I hardly drive with rear passengers. I didn't have much knowledge then and thought rear speakers are essential and went ahead with it. Good front components and subwoofer in the boot is more than enough if you don't have any rear passengers.

Gladen M Line 10 Subwoofer

It's 10 inch SVC subwoofer installed in a sealed box. The box was custom made at Galaxy.

Vibromax Damping

The doors were properly damped, say around 3 sheets went in for each door. I missed taking pics of the inner layer.

Damping did make a good difference. There is a good thud , lower outside noise and most of the freebie Maruti rattles are gone for good.

Rockford Power T600-4 Amplifier

Old vs Gold

Installed under front passenger seat

This is a very solid well built class AB Amp. It's powerful too at 100WRMS per channel at 4 Ohms. Pioneer feels like a tin can compared to this. This Amp is known for clean sound and I totally agree with it. Bass boost remote could be added, it's an optional accessory.

Wiring

1. Scosche Vector RCA cables
2. 4 AWG Power cable with Quaden fuse holder
3. 4 AWG Ground cable
4. 12 AWG subwoofer wire
5. 16 AWG speaker wires

One last pic!!

S-Cross ICE. JVC HU, Morel Elate Titanium 603, Helix DSP.3S, Audiofrog sub, Mosconi & Rockford Amps-img_20210317_114300.jpg

Price

I spent around 1.35 lakhs for the entire setup in the car right now.

How does it sound ?

I love the setup. Sound stage is excellent. Gladens are neutral sounding. Bass is just right for my liking, not a fan of bass heavy setups. The 10 Inch 200 WRMS subwoofer does the job for me. Time alignment improves the overall listening experience and don't skip on that. Never compromise on the source, as it matters a lot.

What next ?

I would be doing further upgrades after an year or so. Plan is to go 3 way active

Galaxy Premium Car Accessories, Kochi

They are well known for all kinds of car accessories. I have got audio setups for Baleno and S-Cross from them. Do note that the installation is totally free of cost for all the parts bought from them. Muneem is an enthusiast and fellow BHPian too who will make sure everything is done right and gives honest advice on all the mods.

Doc, somehow I missed this thread earlier. You have got yourself a very nice audio setup for your S-Cross. We are waiting for your updates as you take this setup to the next level.

Quote:
Many asked me why I drive all the way to Kochi , reason is peace of mind with the installation and I enjoy driving.
The perception in the Cochin among people I know, is that Galaxy is the place to go to only if you have a really big budget in hand. Similar to what you have invested for your setup. That gets their attention.

If you dont really have a big budget, then things are not the same. I spent less than 40% of your budget (not a small amount in itself) and the type of treatment that I got there was very different from what you get. They kept committing that parts would work with each other but they didnt. Despite there being issues with the install, there was zero interest in fixing it and they kept trying to get me out as soon as possible so they could focus on other big (and expensive) installations. Finally I went to another small store and managed to resolve the problems.

Anyways, Im just sharing this because I am not the only one who has had a similar experience there. And people expecting peace of mind installations should be aware of the ground realities and align their expectations accordingly.

Thank you . I am happy with the current setup but I do have plan of further upgrades like adding DSP and going active.

Hmmm, I had been to Galaxy thrice and got ICE upgrade for 2 of my cars. I won't call my ICE upgrade very expensive, it's just a decent setup

Sorry to hear about your experience. Personally, I have found Mr. Muneem very active and customer centric. Did you talk to him to iron out the issues ?

I was thinking about going down the DSP route as well but I postponed it until I could drive down to Bangalore or Madras and get it done at a good installer. And with the current Covid crisis, that will probably only happen in 2022. I look forward to your installation experience, it will be something for me to learn from.

I had replied to a post of his on the Galaxy Cochin thread and requested that he let me know how I can contact him. I was hoping that they could at least resolve the window issue that they gifted me. Also the head unit is creaking. That was several months ago but I never received any DM from him. I guess he is not active on the forum. I didnt want to derail your thread but since you mentioned peace of mind installations, I just wanted to share that not all customers are treated equally. Cheers.

I guess talks about a 3-way active setup has become as rare as hearing about engine swaps these days.

I had plans long back too - but then realised my upgraded setup serves my purpose really well. Good tuning alone can do wonders to an upgraded audio setup.

I have a feeling you'll go ahead with this soon. Waiting for the log.

I believe tuning is the biggest challenge in 3 way active setup. Plan is to add DSP first, tuning and check how it sounds. 3 way active needs more planning and research , I might have to entirely change the current setup of speakers.

I thought DSP makes the biggest difference when the source has limitations. Isn't that so?

Did you check with a spectrum analyser? Even the mobile app ones are extremely helpful. Will help to pinpoint the exact frequencies which have more or less gain compared to others. If the JVC has enough customizable band equalizers - will help with the tuning too.

Correct. I have already upgraded the source. DSP would give me more frequency bands to tune and also help to run active setup

Nope. I will check this out

It's decent with 13 band Equalizer.

If you can lay hands-on, then please do look out for Dayton Audio DSP 408.

Works great and pretty easy software and can control through the mobile too.

The pricing is really good for what it offers. Have you used this DSP ? How's Rockford DSR1 when compared to Dayton ?

I use Dayton dsp in my 3 way active set up. It's great value for money and might serve just well with clean output from aftermarket HU. Also has inexpensive Bluetooth adapter option for ease of tuning from mobile- helps if you would like to tweak the settings yourself without having to connect laptop each time. It also let's you stream aptx Bluetooth audio directly to processor.

But looks like dsr1 is better in terms of tuning option. Based on description it presents 32 bands of equaliser compared to 10 in Dayton for each of the 8 channels. That comes in handy when you try to tune your set up for flat frequency response from stock factory HU or ugly gains in car.

Another option is minidsp. Even it has only 10 frequency bands per channel but it has digital input option which bypasses your player DAC. If you want to experiment with different source options this is a great choice.

Since you've aftermarket HU and considering it's pre out is much cleaner than dirty output of stock HU 10 bands of adjustment should be enough in general.
