Re: BMW transitioning from Linux-based OS 8 to Android-based OS 9 Remains to be seen how the implementation is, and what kind of a system design they come up with.
Android is a runtime (Dalvik VM/ ART) loading on top of (modified) Linux Kernel. In a way, Android can be termed a Linux distro, though not by any means a traditional one.
What that implies is, a Linux-based system running native code is definitely more responsive and reliable than a runtime environment translating it.
But given that Android Automotive has gained prominence with many a auto manufacturers moving to Android platform, this is a case of perfomance being traded off for ease of implementation. |
