BMW transitioning from Linux-based OS 8 to Android-based OS 9

In January 2023, BMW had announced a selective move to Android-based OS 9 for new production vehicles.

https://www.motor1.com/news/629529/b...e-9-announced/

Will irritate recent or imminent buyers of the OS 8 & 8.5 versions I am sure. It is already clear that 8 & 8.5 cannot be upgraded to 9

Even the brand new X1 will not get it unless it is still being built on the production lines.

Re: BMW transitioning from Linux-based OS 8 to Android-based OS 9

Remains to be seen how the implementation is, and what kind of a system design they come up with.

Android is a runtime (Dalvik VM/ ART) loading on top of (modified) Linux Kernel. In a way, Android can be termed a Linux distro, though not by any means a traditional one.

What that implies is, a Linux-based system running native code is definitely more responsive and reliable than a runtime environment translating it.

But given that Android Automotive has gained prominence with many a auto manufacturers moving to Android platform, this is a case of perfomance being traded off for ease of implementation.
