Pio 2990/2950??? Which is original?

Went with a friend to find out about ICE for his Swift (basic set-up). I have read through our ICE section, and had a newbie knowledge, but this trip made me all confused.

Gurus, please help!

1. Went to a shop that claims to be the 'authorized dealer' for Pioneer. Is it any good to buy stuff from there? Does pioneer provide service for their HU's in kerala? (prices here are bit high)

2. The 'authorized dealers' offered Pio 2950 at a good price. But that was without bill and warranty. When asked about bill and warranty, they said 2950 is duplicate stuff, and if we want warranty, we should buy Pio 2990.

3. Now the confusing part. Both HUs look and function 'exactly' same. The only difference is the number. 'Authorized dealers' say 2950 is duplicate of 2990.

4. Another shop offered 2950 at very low prices. Their version is that 2950 is original (and those are imported pieces), while 2990 is Indian/chinese made ones distributed officially in India. Could this be true?

5. Pio website shows 2950 only! Couldnt find info on 2990 on searching. Could this mean 2990 is fake?

6. Would an 'authorised dealer' sell fake HU with bill and warranty?

All these questions essentially ask one thing- Which HU to go for? 2950/2990?

Since this is for a friend's car- dont ask me to stretch budget to buy Alpine.

This is the HU (2950 as searched from net. 2990 is exact same, but for the number)

In all probability, the 2990 is a fake. The so-called 'authorized dealer' is brazenly pulling a fast one. He must be counting on no one returning to him for service. You wouldn't normally cast a second glance at the bill nor register the warranty card, so he is safe.

The Pio 2950 model is in their catalog and known to most ICE shoppers.

No. to the best of my knowledge, both are original! the 2950 is a grey import. So it comes without company warranty(dealers in cochin are offering 1 yr service warranty though), whereas, 2990 is distributed by pioneer india with company warranty. It is the same with 3950/3990, etc. Btw, i think there is a difference between 2950&2990, ie 2950 has bass and treble control whereas 2990 has eq.Also the rings around the volume have different backlight! ie, 2950 has red ring , whereas 2990 has green (i think)

: JayD got it correct to the toe.

Remember, There're hardly any DUPLICATE HUs available in the mainstream market these days (unless one goes to the assembled havens). Most of the so called 'DUPLICATES' are grey imports.
Same case applies to Pioneer 2950 and 2990. Worldwide, it is 2950. In some countries, it is called 2990. Some changes are present in the features and looks. It also comes with the official warranty from Pioneer india.

Don't believe everything what a car accessories shop says. Try and verify it by asking proof and using the grey matter situated between 2 ears. And the AUTHORISED DEALER You've quoted is know for his shady tricks. And so is the other DEALER.

That's odd, to say the least. To most of us who use the Internet to cross-check information, it would appear otherwise. Pioneer does not list any Dealers in India, only service centers. They don't have official pages for India on their website other than service.

If they are doing very low level entry by selling low cost products through dealers they are now appointing (without publicizing), we would stand corrected. Otherwise, the confusion in intervening time between appointing dealers with India-specific models and having India pages would work against them.

LBM-bhai may be able to throw some light on Pioneer activity in the northern parts of India. Also Sam, who moves in those circles.

If anyone has bought any Pioneer product with "Pioneer India warranty", perhaps they could post the address of Pioneer India?

Autocop is promoting pioneer in India. Earlier there was the Indian Line-up product detail on the pioneer.com.sg site which is removed right now but a little info is still there.....

It is almost a year or so since Pioneer launched it's official line up here. Autocop is their local distributors.

Many people have bought Pioneer with authorised Pioneer India warranty. In this forum, Mail4Ajo also bought a HU.

So guys, I guess Pio 2990 is NOT WORTH the extra cash over the Pio 2950, right? OR?

Hey! Yes I got the Pio 2990 with company warranty. Again, Pio 2990 has the eq + green backlight. I'd prefer EQ over just bass and treble control. Check the pictures I've attached.

I'd suggest to go for the 2990!

EDIT: Crazy Driver, how much were you quoted for the Pio 2950/2990?

You are mistaken. The 2950 is available with B&W. And it doesn't have any treble/bass control. But it has an equalizer !
