ICE with mp3 player minus HU

I'm still thinking about what to install in my indica, (still not that adept at driving it !)
thing is , i want to use my mp3 player , and I've already decided that i want front components and rear 6x9's and an amp. now that doesn't leave much of a budget for an HU.
Can't i just use a 3.5mm to RCA cable end connect my portable mp3 player directly to the amp?
