Hi all!

Has anyone on the forum have any experience with these Sony XS-HF167 components? its supposed to be the speciality line from Sony. It looks well made, has aluminium woofer dome and Ribbon tweeters.

Jeez! $500 Sony components? :Shockked:

Someone would really need to gather guts to try Sony components by spending that amount!

Sony comps with ribbon tweets? And at $500? Very Very bad/dumb/foolish marketing move.

Regardless of how good they sound, they are still called "Xplodes". And the sound quality of "Xplodes" is, well, (ugh!) legendary.

If they were trying to get serious about sound, you'd think they at least have the sense to establish a separate brand (that will not have anything remotely connected to Sony) so people will at least try and listen to them without reaching for a barf bag first.

This is like a Sipani branded limo trying to compete with a Merc S class.

It available in Singapore for abt 375$ ,10-11k which is not too bad. Some online stores selling them for 199usd.

I still would not buy it. Thanks to TBHP :Cheering:

HE HE , I just cant stand that X symbol on anything after watching their quality detoriate year by year, :)

I assume that the word "ribbon" with reference to the tweeters pertain to their rectangular shape, as opposed to conventional circular ones. This is the first time I have seen this - which other brands have these? And do they have any advantage / disadvantage over circular ones?

the first ribbon I have use was the London Decca. replaced the tweeter on a Dahlquist DQ10 with the London (replaced the 5" cone mid with one from Audax too).

For $199 there shoudl be better options. I have not heard teh Sony speakers in question though.

I would not underestimate SONY. Just as Sony home audio in India sucks..but there ES series ( not available in india ) is very nice. So one should not dismiss SONY altogether..They DO have the technology to make good stuff..

ES series has it's lemon too.

But, yes, dont discount Sony nonetheless they have produced some nice sounding gear (a model here and a model there) in the past that is why I mentioned that I have not heard them yet.

Sony is capable of producing good products no doubt, don't know how this particular speaker sounds, but most of their stuff is mass marketted stuff at cheap prices, and their entry level stuff has horrible build quality and getting worse by the year.
Though some said this years amps are slightly better than last year's but I have not tested any yet.

The last time I auditioned some components by Sony, they were terrible. XS-170 was priced close to 5k with B&W and about 2.9k without.

The mids were loud and distorted and I couldn't hear anything else (almost). Those components were running off a Pio HU and Kenwood 2-channel amplifier. I just hope they're improving.
