ICE for IKON..Budget 20k MAX..

Hi Guru's,

I would like to upgrade my ice setup.. Max budget is 20k.

My Existing setup..

1. Car - ikon 1.3
2. HU - Kenwood cassete player
3. Speakers - Kenwood co-axials [ front and rear ]

My Requirements are,
1. HeadUnit should have Aux-in port, should play DVD-MP3
2. Front Speakers - JBL or Infinity [ Comps prefered - Based on availability in chennai ]
3. Rear Speakers - JBL or Infinity [ Based on availability in chennai ]
4. SUB - No as of now.
5. AMP - Confused whether to go or not..

I need clear and crisp sound with Decent bass.
What is the front stock location in ikon? I prefer going for component in the front. I dont want to cut the door pads. which size will do?

And, if i am going for Front component, i will be running it from HU most probably. Will that cause any problem?

If AMP is suggested for this setup, i have to look after the grey market for my requirement.

Suggestions please,

Madhan

clear crisp sound with decent bass will need an amp. since you already have a co-ax setup and are upgrading, it's better you go with an amp for a more noticeable difference.

it's not a rule that you must buy amp's from the grey market. see where you are getting a fair deal for the price. for a 2k-3k difference on a 20k setup, it's better to have assurance than risk.

my name has a guru for entirely other reasons, i'm no ICE guru, don't take my opinions to be such.

My Suggestion Would be to go in stage wise manner:

1) Get HU with your requirement
2) Get Comps ay front
3) Get a budget 4 channel amp.

This I belive can be done in 20k Budget(including paying for good Wiring)

Later on if the the need be you can adda sub & use the existing amp to power it or upgrade the rear speakers.

2. Front Speakers - JBL or Infinity [ Comps prefered - Based on availability in chennai ] JBL Compos will cost you around 6k
3. Rear Speakers - JBL or Infinity [ Based on availability in chennai ] Get coax like 937 and mount them on the pracel shelf at the rear, use MDF - 5k with MDF
4. SUB - No as of now.
5. AMP - Confused whether to go or not.. In your budget you will be able to get a Sony 552 2 Channel amp.
I suggest you upgrade step wise like said by technocrat.

Hi Madhan,

Can't answer the second question, but you can get an Alpine HU - CDE 9873 - for around 10k (with Bill and Warranty).

Other Alpine HUs will cost as follows:

CDE 9881 : 12800.00 (MRP)
CDE 9883 : 14800.00 (MRP)

All the best in your ICE quest and let us know your config

Fords normally have a 5''x7'' provision. It must be the same for the Ikon, but I'm not 100% sure. A 507c (5.25'' midbass) should fit in the door with a spacer (an oval shaped spacer with a circular opening would be needed).

Hydra, will this require cutting of door pads?

Cutting of door pads should not be needed. The spacer and the speaker would be hidden inside the stock grille (inside the stock door-panel). The midbass would be screwed onto the spacer and the spacer would be screwed onto the doorpanel, as though it were a 5x7 speaker.

Hi Madhan,

I enquired with JBL dealer for speakers for my Ikon Flair. They suggested GTO507c for front door stock locations (i thought of putting GTO607c however they dont fit in the stock location on the front door).

This what i am thinking of putting in my car:
1. Pioneer 5950/6950 HU
2. Front Speakers: JBL GTO 507C (Rs.4950 with B&W)
3. Rear Speakers: JBL GTO 937 (Rs.4450 with B&W)

You can also look at Kenwood 4036 HU which has USB + Aux-in, it might cost you around 7k.

Hmmm...i too am not sure about amp. Many other threads on this forum suggested amp might not be needed. Although it improves SQ a lot.

I hav question, my car doesnt have any slots on the parcel tray for fitting rear speakers. Do we need to cut the Parcel tray to fit the rear speakers?

Do let us know about what did you finalized and how it sounds after the upgrade.

Cheers

I don't think the 607c would fit, unless you fit it from the outside, by cutting the grille-part in the door-panels. That means the speaker and its grille would be visible. I'm not completely sure if this would work, though.
