I thought components are special speakers designed to play a specific band of frequencies which you set in the crossover, more like band pass filter.

I'm afraid that's not correct. Components are full range, except for say, frequencies below 80/100 Hz. The crossovers are used to distribute the frequencies to the corresponding speakers.
With components you can have tweeters and mid-basses at the most suitable locations. In fact, IMO, if you can't utilize that feature it is almost as good as co-axials. For example, if components are mounted on rear MDF trays (with both tweeters and mid-basses on it), it would not be too different from normal full-range co-axials.
