My god!! We are paying so much extra???

BTW, Sony amps are good for show but not for go! It's a proven fact. Razor has given a good reasoning too. Yes, the Sub wasn't performing well with the measly output it got from the sony amp probably.

Dash Xplods
Door Xplods (2 sets)
Rear Xplods
Xplod Amp
Xplod Sub
Sony HU

Add them too na - to the 'already procured' total. Then you get true price. And then this thread get's mailed to your wifey

Some possible reasons.

The Sony is a 10". Mounted in a box that looks like < half the size of my GZ box. Also, all my HU settings were, as always, flat. Except one. The sub level was set at -3. It ranges from +6 to - 18/20 (forgot). The sub gain on the 75.4 is set to around 50%. Amp bass boost is 0. LPF'd at 80.

@razor reset it to 0. Things were slightly better. Maybe the Sony needs more boost. Not sure of the technical terms here, but let me put it this way - it wasn't inaudible, but yes, it could not be 'felt' much. The GZ makes it's presence, both 'felt' and 'heard'.

The bass seemed to sound better in the Indica - hatch / sedan making a difference? Or maybe the GTO 937 rears in his car were lending a helping hand to the Sony?

@Speedzack :
1. The Alpine CDE 9881 costs $200 on the alpine site. Onlinecarstereo.com rovides very good deals on car audio.

2. The Sony Sub is normally connected to the JBL CS60.2 in my car, it produces resonable thumps, maybe not so refined as a JBL or a GZ Sub. The Sony Amp powers the front components and rear ovals.

What we had done was, we had connected the Sony Sub in my car to the MBQuart amp in ShuvC's car. And strangely we could not almost hear the sub. Definitely it lacks power. However, one more reason, as very rightly pointed out by Razor, maybe that the Illusion front components on ShuvC's car was drowning the sub.
After I put it back in my car and connected it back to the JBL CS60.2, its thumping as usual.

However, point well taken, the Sony amp is not that good too. The investment in the Sony amp and Sub is something I should not have done.

Lekin kya karein bhaiyya, people learn from mistakes. Guess I'll be able to advice people against Sony after this.

Dash Xplods - 1300
Door Xplods (2 sets) - 1500 + 600(second hand) 2100
Rear Xplods - 2700
Xplod Amp - 5000
Xplod Sub - 4000
Sony HU - 7500
Total = 22600

plus upgrade cost 39830

= Rs. 62430!! ( Dont tell me!)

Whatever may be the reason, I am convinced to the root that Mr. Needs to bow out. Enough! It was like comparing Alphonso mangoes with "Maaza".

@ Razor : if you allow , would like to do the same test in Phoenix just before I say bye-bye to the sub.

Small correction. Both subs were being driven by the 75.4. 284rms.
Sony - 330wrms @ 4ohms
GZ - 350 wrms @ 4ohms

The MBQ drives the Electra components.

I believe you! I checked the sub at Spar supermarket, where Sony has a display board. I had to touch the surround to make out any sound.

The funniest part was that display board has 3 pairs of speakers (a set of components and 2 models of 6x9 ovals), an amp and a sub. But, there is no switch to hear a pair of speakers alone - all speakers are firing simultaneously. So, one can't really make out which speaker sounds like what. It is a general cacophony, like a PA system mounted on an auto or taxi during election times. I guess most of the bass was coming from the ovals, drowning out the sub. And to top it all, most of the people coming and auditioning were going ooh and aah, "sakkath idiyalla?" ("great, isn't it?").

Hope the other brands are taking notes.

Arrey ShuvC, $250 seemed too good a deal for CDE-9886. The guy who's doing the purchase and stuff is really a fantastic person. He seemed to have taken an interest in the matter. He was also very enthusiastic about the change, when I asked him if he could change the HU, he was more than happy to oblige.

Could the paradoxical behavior of the Sony sub be explained by one or both of the following?
1. The gain set on the 75.4 amp was lower than that on the 60.2
2. The LPF setting on the 75.4 amp was lower than that on the 60.2
Sorry if I am way off the mark.

Possible reasons. We did not check with the GZ hooked onto his setup/car.

Not a problem. Then we'll see how the JBL GT4-12 and the Xplod match up. But be advised that my sub gains are reduced to suit my preference of sound stage - semi front dominated.

@nura: sir, do you still have those coaxials we spoke of? As you rightly pointed out, the Pio 4-way rear fills are the weak links in my setup.
