ICE for Zen 2003 for around 20k

Hey guys,

I have been planning an ICE for my Zen Lx 2003 for quite some time. I mostly listen to new Hindi film songs. I am looking for a SQ based setup. My budget is around 20k.

After some reading, I have come with the following config:

HU : Kenwood 6539U
reason for selecting : supposed to have good SQ, USB
Co ax : JBL 947
reason for selecting : great reviews, good price
Comp : Illusion El 6.1
reason for selecting : great reviews, VFM

I have very limited knowledge in this area, so please help me get max out of my budget!

Can the whole setup (equipments, damping, wiring etc) be done within my budget?

Please suggest me good installers in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai.

Can the 6.5” comps be installed in my Zen?

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

Your selection of equipment is good, but try and listen before you buy. Just so that you know what your settling for. If you can head to BoomAudio they can give you options. You are in Mumbai which makes it easier

Also start saving and budgeting for an amp. Even though the Electra performance well running off an HU. Feeding them with an amp will leave you electrAfied!!

Happy ICing

Please get an Oval speaker for the rear with a sealed box if you are not planning for an amplifier and an woofer at a later date. Rest seems to be ok.

You will need a spacer ring to fit the 6.5" speakers in your Zen.

thanks s0uljah for the reply! I surely would love an amp with my setup, but coz of budget constraints, i am not going with it now.

Thanks for the tip kURETI.
I was planning ovals on mdf tray. I like the idea of ovals in a box, but do you think it would be possible without much trouble. For eg, its placement, the box dimension etc ...

Thanks navin for the info!

I have few doubts regarding wiring and damping in zen. Can someone shed some light on this issue?

How much wiring and damping cost me?

TIA

10K should cover damping the doors, 2-3 pairs of good RCA wire, power wire and install labour.

Instead of spending on rear ovals now. I'd recommend you get an entry level amp like the JBL GT5-A604 and run the Illusion 6.1 off it.
You will thank me for it.

I second nitrous. Get a decent HU with USB (5-6K), comps (5-6K) and a 4ch amp (5-6K). and spend the rest out of 20K (2-3K) for good RCA and wires. The rear output of your 4 ch amp will be unused now and you can get a decent oval/round speaker for rear later (2-3K) and connect to this amp rear channels. And once you are financially equipped for a sub, install a 10" sub by bridging the rear channel of your amp and run the rear oval/co-axs from HU.

I'd suggest front 6.5" components+ 12" sub+ amp anyday.
For a small car like the zen, rears can be done without.

Sure - me too, if he is willing to sacrifice a little more space in boot and a good installation mod/expense with spacers for 6.5" ers. As you pointed out rears are not necessary.

Lol. i am confused. I had almost finalized my set.
Ok, I have decided not to go with the co ax (as it is, total cost was way exceeding my budget).

I will just install the HU and Comps for now. After few months, I can add the amp and the sub. What do u guys think?

So now, including wiring, damping(2 doors) and labour, the total cost should be around 21k (i think)

TIA

My commute to office was getting really boring so needed a ICE urgently.

So, went to Ajay's place yesterday and he suggested me the following components for my budget of 20k.

HU : Pio 3050UB (Rs. 5700/-)

Comps : Illusion El 6.1 (Rs. 7000/-)

Amp 4 Ch : Kamp (China) (Rs. 5000/-)

Wiring & Installation : Rs. 2300/-

The installation took a loong time (abt 6-7 hrs).
Finally, I got a chance to hear the system.

My first reaction -
Sounds good, but seriously lacks bass.
I could reach the max volume and still sit in the car. I actually want more power!

I will definately add a sub soon! May be the JBL GT5-S12.

Since many may not have heard about this amp , here is a pic

sujitm - your link to amp picture is not working. Can you post it as an attachment? By the way what are the spec of this amp? Any site or details? Please post.

Since you have only HU and comps, there wont's be a good bass. Either you need to go for a sub, or at least 6x9 ovals (if you have no plans for a sub). But nothing can replace a good sub in the bass department.

Would really love the feedback of this amp too.

Yes, after hearing the setup, i really really felt the need for a sub! Since my setup is still incomplete, a review wouldn't be correct now.

Lets see how this amp powers a sub.

Also, since no damping done, things start to vibrate when i turn up the volume.

Here is a pic of the amp
