Let me get this clear.
If you really do bother about 256-320 kbps mp3 sounding worse than original wave - there can be only tow reasons why:

1. The psychoacoustic modeling in mp3 does not sound good to your ears. Try Ogg or AAC. They have better modeling.

2. Your ears still retain sensitivity to extreme high frequencies. Precisely speaking above 16kHz spectrum.

Point 1 holds true for me. I really feel Ogg and AAC to be much more superior sounding, tone wise.

Point 2 doesn't hold valid for me because I am not longer in my teenage (after which your ears high freq sensitivity start deteriorating), coupled with the fact that exposure to loud live rock music (especially those mad drummers) and high noise industrial machinery - has robbed me off any sensation of more than 14kHz.

So I cannot make out (audibly) anything about these high bit rates vs even higher bit rates fight.

MP3 or OGG vbr ~175 to 192 kbps sounds perfect to me.

I suspect it is the pressing.

Believe me or not, I have zero MP3 collection in my car now. Now my ears prefer Wav, DTS, AAC, AC3 and Flac only, because of my stupid Car PC. But I cant find any big difference in MP3 in my Home PC setup.

do you use DTS & AC3 for audio only? Do yo rip them from DVD using Smart ripper or Magic ripper?

MP3.

As I said - my ears are goner for higher freqnuencies - and higher bit rates are only gonna improve higher frequencies resolution.

The point regarding aac / ogg sounding better than mp3 is at lower bitrates, when I can make out that the audio is not a wave/flac/ape file.

For AC3/DTS, I prefer Cinematize or Reference for ripping and AC3Filter for Decoding. For Flac and AAC, I use dBpoweramp with Nero Digital.

What is the best format for Pioneer 5050. I am not able to store music in my HDD yet, because of the inconsistency I have been experiencing.

Have lots of music in FLAC, and it did work on my HU last week, but now it doesn't recognize it. What is the best bet I have to play lossless music on my HU ?
