Kenwood 6043 not reading off portable hard disks. Help!

My recently purchased Kenwood 6043 HU plays MP3 stored on pen drives without a prob. Yesterday I bought transcend 160gb 2.5" portable external HDD. It is formatted in FAT 32 and contains 20+GB of songs. Upon connecting the display shows USB error. The drive works fine on PC/Laptop though.

What could be the solution?Help.

Maybe your HDD needs more power, which the HU is unable to supply?

I connected my 40 GB FAT32 formatted external HDD with 30 gb+ of songs on my Clarion 785 and it reads them flawlessly.

One question here. Is it a laptop harddisk converted to USB using the HDD casing/convertor?

Out of my experience with pio 5090, i cannout get the laptop usb hard disk to work. That being said, the readily available usd harddisk without convertor works!

Its clear that the external HD needs more power to operate than a single USB hub in your HU can supply. Do not do that, you may damage the External HD.

Yes, I tried the laptop HDD in an external casing. Works like a charm. Yet to try my WD/Transcend HDD.

Yes, my only grouses are:
1. No folder change control from the remote (thats a real bad miss)
2. No subwoofer phase control from the HU (although not that major, as I can reverse the polarity when required directly at the enclosure end; and it generally stays like that forever. But still, might affect people upgrading from a Pioneer and used to changing the sub phase on the fly)

Wow, that was the quickest decision making I have seen!

At least wait till some 785 user confirms the maximum size of an external HDD that plays well on the 785!

That's the way it is! Can anybody confirm whether the Clarion DXZ785 USB plays off 320gb/160gb hdds (Portable/ 2.5"/External) - Seagate, Transcend, Western Digital etc. ?

Is your HDD a ATA or SATA ?
it may be possible one of those might work.
Else check with any expert if you can hook any separate power to your HDD.

Try with a Y usb splitter cable and a car charger with usb port.
One end of the Y goes to charger, other end to the HU and the left out end to the HDD.
