As I understand car batterires are 12 volts and car speakers are 4 ohms . That means max they can draw is 3 amps . This brings us to max 3 x 3 x 4= 36 wats RMS ( I2R rule).

So how does one pump up the sound more than that . and what is the use of having say 50 watt or even 80 watt speakers or 300 watt amplifiers do they actually draw this much.

Ok I know that bigger amps and sound systems have bigger and better capacitors to temporaryt bridge the power peaks but that is not the max capacity

also when U bridge the amplifier ( say for Sub woofer) does it mean it's current capacity is doubled or volatge is doubled -- in other words parrallel or series). I know that in any case the resultant peak power would go up.

pranil, this is simple esp. after SMPS became the vogue. Before SMPS we used to use inverters to get AC from DC then use a step up transformer to get higher AC voltage and rectify that to higher DC voltage. This used to cause a lot of heat (and hence energy wasted).

SMPS are far simpler and far more efficient.

When you bridge an amp it can deliver twice the current but it is still limited to the ability of it's power supply so if the amp delivers 3A per channel and 2 channels deliver 6A but the PS is only 5A you will be limited to 5A.

Guys Just got a soundstream installed in my Swift nad i say it rocks...The car is not powerful enough to handle the sound....It simply starts to vibrate above the half volume ....got thye following

1. RMS 150W 6 " Front Door Compos
2. Back Door 6" 85 W RMS
3. Back Tray 6*9" 120W RMS
4. 360W RMS 4 channel
5. Sony 7810

IT beats just about everything reviewed her...Forget JBL and Sony and BOSS and etc....Just go for it guys...u wont be disappointed.

I assume you mean a soundstream power amp right? or do you mean speakers as well?

1. you managed to squeeze 6x9s into the rear parcel tray?
2. you got 6 speakers and only a 4 channel power amp how is it connected?
3. Do you feel the rear tray vibrate?

My Sony 7710 accepts Aux input. I was wondering whether I will be able to connect my iPod with it. I don't want the pod interface on my music system, only wants to play my play-lists thru my car system.

I am not 100%sure but from what i understand you wont get the playlists to diplay on the sony HU but you will be able to listen tot he tunes. to see what is playing you'll have to refer to the ipod display.

I have seen Clarioin's, Pio's and Alpine's Ipod connectors but not Sonys so cant comment exactly.

obviously a universal way is to use either the line out of the ipod to the aux in (you will need something like the Pocket Line out from Send Station) or use an FM modulator but neither of these will allow you to use the HU to view the ipod's play list.

I would advise against using the headphone out of the ipod to the aux in as it will be a severe compromise in sound quality (ok before a bunch of you audiophiles jump me i will admit that MP3 and the FM modulator are compromises too) besides on 4G ipod it has been found that the output level (for using the phones out to the aux in) is quite low and one has to turn up the volume of th HU to get an acceptable volume levels. 3G ipods strangely do not suffer from this to the same extent. Apple giveth and Apple taketh away!

Also using the headphones out of the ipod may be a source of ground loops esp if you are using external amplifers in your car stereo and this will be an invitation for alternator whine and other funny noises.
