There are HUs that have a USB input and a SD card reader can be used to convert that to read SD cards. Kenwood's 342 and Sony's GT630 both sell for about Rs. 5000 (maybe less).

So for a budget setup its best to get such a HU, and pair it with some nice Compos... Right?

That's what I would do. If I had 15K I'd get a USB HU for 6K, Components for 5-6K and a pair of JBL GT5 or cheap GZ 6x9s for 3-4K.

Again the disclaimer being that I have NOT heard the no-name Chinese Hus that are in the market.

+1.
Choose HU that has both card reader and usb. Choose comps and 6x9s that are rated 50-60 rms. Add a little damping in doors and it should solve the purpose.

yaar. bahut hi mast waalie entertainment le rahe ho. here are further answers:

a. Amkette makes a USB drive SD card reader. Plug/play for 90 bucks (in gurgaon!!). If u see NP, u may get in 50
b. 1/4th of capability is a misnomer. Most front compos in that budget play between 50W to 70W (608c) RMS. Your HU can output 52W. And in any case it should sustain ~15W that you would require

and please - ipod wouldnt cost much less than a 2nd hand good condition pio etc unit.

and fwiw, 320 kbps quality >> (audible even to me) 128 kbps IMO!

Most HUs will put out about 10W rms. Given that Most speakers are in the range of about 87-89db/1W/0.5m (car speakers are often rated at 0.5m instead of 1m used for home audio) you will be able to produice 92-93db (and still have a little headroom) in the car which is loud enough for most normal conditions.87db+6db = 93db. That means at 4W you are already at 93db.

93-95db average SPLs is what I normally listne to music at. Ofcoruse peaks might push this to 105db but this is only for 100ms (0.1s) or so.

What an amplifier does is
improve bass definition,
push the SPL capability about 5-6db (many speakers will hit their physical XMax limits long befreo their thermal limits), and
let the HU do a better job since the HU's amp is not sucking power.
