MF I can suggest that you convert the FLAC to 320 CBR to get the max out of them.

or extreme VBR in EAC file size will be about 1/3 of FLAC but your MP3 palyer can read the files.

Guys, I am ready to do whatever you guys say. Only question would be how?

I am a layman using all these encoders / decoders.

Use dbPowerAmp. It's very good.

They stopped giving it away free quite a while back, but the paid version is worth every penny. One-click conversion from nearly anything to anything. And it's FAST. If you have a Core-Duo or even a HT processor, it uses each processor to the max to do simultaneous conversions of multiple files. Very good results too. I used to use iTunes for my conversions, but now I'm a total slave to dbPowerAmp :)

If you want to write the FLACs to CD, you can use Nero (5.5 and above). Nero has a plugin to convert and write FLAC to CD format. Good results.

Audio CD format ? Or can convert to MP3 / WMA also ?

Yep. The Nero FLAC plugin I mentioned is for FLACs to be written to Audio CD format through Nero. Nero does the conversion from FLAC to Audio CD on the fly, as the writing process happens.

To convert FLAC to MP3, I'd recommend dbPowerAmp (dunno if Nero converts from FLAC to MP3 anyway heh, heh).

Using Nero to rip CDs to MP3 is IMHO not very advisable. Nero asks you to buy the MP3 codec after a few rips, and from what I remember of it, it takes a long time to rip. I haven't used Nero anytime recently for ripping, so I don't know about the quality.

The dbPowerAmp can convert about any format to any format. It can rip CDs to any format too.

A two step conversion will be lossy. A direct conversion is best, hence the question to know if Nero can do it directly to MP3.

For CD to MP3, I still use CDex.

It's not two-step :)

If you want a FLAC to Audio CD conversion, Nero can convert FLAC to Audio CD in a single go.

If its FLAC to MP3, dbPowerAmp can do it in one go. The MP3s can be written to an MP3 CD later.

Correct. Besides, why would you want to convert your lossless FLAC to lossy WMA/MP3? Burn them onto Audio CDs and you'll enjoy the maximum quality. :)

FLAC for storage. The master copy.
MP3 to carry around for regular use, like in the car.

Oh! I do the same. I have my MP3s and AACs entertaining me in the car during day-to-day traffic.

I prefer 256kbps AAC. Adequate quality and good space utilization.

Having said that, remember that higher the bitrate, better the quality. So it all boils down to how much you can compromise on the space aspect.

Any good sites for free downloads that you know of ? Hindi and English music.

TBHP does not promote or condone the piracy of music. I would guess there are sites where one can pay for music even high bit rate music but I have no idea about these.

I dont download music. I buy the CD and rip it for my ipod using a method that has been documented on TBHP before (Sorry, I am useless at search).

My opinion is that if you are having a ICE system which is priced below 15,000, there is no point in writing MP3's at 320 kbps. You won't be able to notice the difference b/w 160 & 320 kbps.

So better stick to 160 kbps !

step 1. register on hydrogenaudio.org

step 2. download Exact Audio Copy I use 3.96.1 but i think the latest stable release is 3.97

step 3. if you want to rip a mathematically lossless version download wavpak 4.2 as well (4.3 is in beta last i heard)

step 4a. configure EAC to use LAME

step 4b. if you want to rip lossless and mp3 at the same time use wack 0.46 and follow the author's instructions

step 5. if you do not have a stable internet connection download CD database from freedb.organd follow instructions carefully here.

step 6. download wapet, wavegain 1.2.4 and accuraterip.dll (part of dbpoweramp) hydrogrenaudio.org on how to install them

step 7. start ripping.

for those who dont want to experiment my settings for LAME and WAVPak are as follows:

LAME 3.96.1
ARGUMENTS=--preset extreme --id3v2-only --pad-id3v2 --ignore-tag-errors --scale %x --ta "%a" --tl "%g" --tn "%n" --tt "%t" --ty "%y" --tg "%m" %s %d
FILEPATH=D:\mp3\%a\%g\%n - %t

WAVPAK
ARGUMENTS=-hm -w "Artist=%a" -w "Album=%g" -w "Track=%n" -w "Title=%t" -w "Year=%y" -w "Genre=%m" %s %d
FILEPATH=F:\wav\%a\%g\%n - %t

I would not use my settings as they might not be the best. I would not be surprised if one of you guys did not find a better set of settings. it took me 2-3 days to set up my EAC. Since you guys are younger you should do it in 1-2 days.

step 6. download wapet, wavegain 1.2.4 and accuraterip.dll (part of dbpoweramp) hydrogrenaudio.org on how to install them

Dear Navinji
if im not mistaken
LAME 3.97 includes accuraterip.dll (thats what this site says "AccurateRip")

Wapet and wavegain can be downloaded from the above metnioned links
However please tell me about how to use Wapet and wavegain
Though ive registered on hydrogenaudio and read up on LAME i have failed to find out about how Wapet and wavegain are used/installed etc.
please help

regaurds
