Hi friends, planning to upgrade sub woofer for my car. So considering pioneer 308d4, polk db1240 and db1212. I know all are different types but i have no other option but to select from these because the nearest shop has only these! :Frustrati Later on i ll be upgrading to a monoblock amplifier for this sub. So please suggest one subwoofer, keeping this in mind. It would be very helpful if anybody can give aprox price and if these are still in market.

Thanks in advance for your valuable reply

What amp do you intend to use?
Do you want SPL or SQ?

The 1212 is a ready box the 1240 is a sub and you have to supply the box. Do you know anyone who can make a good box?

1. Don't bother if they are currently available in the market or not. If you are getting it conveniently (and their are no obvious signs of age or bad storage), buy one and enjoy the music - instead of perpetually waiting for the best

2. Most Pio subs operate best in either ported boxes or free air. Ported boxes generally are louder, but in a badly designed box sound a bit 'muffled' and boomy. What is your objective - 'loud and boomy' or 'not so loud but really tight'?

3. Ask the dealer to give you an audition of the sub (only) in a sealed box in a car. The finished one may be better than getting a box made, even if it is slightly costlier

Not sure of prices, but one would expect to pay slightly more where you are.

Amplifier not decided as of now. right now i have a pioneer 4 channel entry level amplifier
Am more inclined towards sq setup, but like to show off at times too!!
yea 1212 is a ready box type and cost around 10 k here, while the 1240 with a custom box (almost a clone of 1212) cost the same. 1240 is dual coil while 1212 according to my knowledge is single coil. Box is imported from delhi as the installer here came from delhi

3. If you like 'not so loud but really tight', one of the Polks will be better than the other - ask the dealer to give you an audition of both in a sealed box in a car. Without going into specs, this will tell you which one is better for sealed, the other will perform well in a ported box

Yea, i need tight but a little loud type(for showing off little ! stupid:)
He has a ported box almost looking like the polk db121 company box.
The polk 1240 dual coil in box cost around 10k
Pioneer 308d4 dvc in similar box cost 7800 rs

so what you all suggest?

10K is not a bad price for the "company box" - see if you can bargain it down. The db1212 is a 2 ohms sub in a slot-loaded (ported; slot is in the rear right) box. This should go loud enough for what you want, if you are driving it with a mono.

Ask for an audition of the db1212 in your car with the Pio amp, which should be able to put out 150-200W on the rear channels bridged. Hopefully it is not too terribly boomy if Polk has designed the box well.

Do not drive a 2 ohm sub (or 2 paralleled 4 ohm coils) with a bridged amplifer.

Sorry, will be careful next time. Thanks for pointing the mistake.

when i visited the shop, i was in my friends car and the installer connected the polk db1212 to a "convex" 4 channel amp bridged and it was very powerful, loud and tight enough.
I mean i liked the quality of the db1212, but pioneer champion series 308d4 dvc and 308d2 dvc was also available there and could't do audition of those.
So just wanna know if pioneer and polk dual coil (1240 dvc) subs will perform better than this db1212

Is it? why so and how to use with a 4 channel amp?

Oops, how forgetful of me! Of course one should not connect a 2 ohms load across 2 channels of an amp bridged. That's because each channel will then effectively see 1 ohms load, which it may (most amps definitely) not be able to drive and go up in smoke trying to.

Oh does that means i shouldn't power it with my old pioneer gm-x374 4 channel? if connecting, then how to use it? without bridging? just single channel?
In near future i ll b buying a pair of component speakers too and use the present pioneer gm-x374 4 channel for powering them and get a seperate amplifier dedicated for sub. so what say? is it wise to go for db1212? or go for pioneer dvc or polk dvc? Which ever i get should work decently with my present amplifier and should work better with a new amplifier later on.
I know am totally confusing !!:Frustrati

Did not want to start a new thread for this query. Looks like the best place to ask this considering the topic is Polk db1212

Will the Polk Audio db1212 12" Car Subwoofer (with enclosure) go with the Kicker 700.5 Amp?

I listen only to Hard Rock and Metal so tight SQL - not so loud bass is the need of the hour.

Even though this is a ported box and not sealed I think its should be a decent match and should give tight enough bass.

More importantly am checking with the audiophile techies for compatibility as the sub is a 2 ohms sub.

Polk Audio db1212 Sub
Overall Frequency Response - 26-200 Hz
Nominal Impedance - 2 ohms
Recommended Amplifier Power - 50-500w
Power Handling (continuous) - 360 w
Power Handling (peak) - 720 w
Efficiency - 97 dB

700.5 SUBWOOFER channel driven
@ 14.4V, 4Ω mono, <= 1% THD+N - 210W x 1
@ 14.4V, 2Ω mono, <=1% THD+N - 420W x 1

Selectable Electronic Crossover Variable HI or OFF (bypass) | 50–200Hz, 12dB/octave
Variable low-pass | 50–200Hz, 24dB/octave (SUB)
Bass Boost Variable 0–18dB @ 40Hz
Subsonic Filter 24dB/octave, fixed at 25Hz

Thanks in Advance :)
