Supreme Court issues notice on recklessly parked Trucks (killed 8304 people in 2 yrs)

Source & Full Article

SC notice to govt on killer trucks

Quote:
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Centre's response after a PIL gave chilling details of thousands of motorists meeting gory deaths every year because of trucks and trailers parked without sufficient warning on highways, many carrying iron rods protruding out dangerously.

'SaveLife Foundation', an NGO, used the Right to Information (RTI) Act to collect details of fatalities resulting from collision of vehicles with these haphazardly parked trucks, many of which carry construction material, including iron rods and angles.

The NGO said there was no law to punish the drivers and owners of these trucks, which caused accidents resulting in the death of 8,304 people in two years (2009-11) in eight states.

Hope the SC comes up with some stringent norms, and ways to check this deadly menace, to which so many valuable human lives have been lost . I hope some strict action comes by and helps in reducing so many gory pictures that are posted here

Thanks for the informative post Sanjz. We do need such stringent regulations to provide some sort of safe place for the people to travel on whether it is a vehicular or pedestrian mode. I belive we do have some very effective laws which have been rendered completely useless due to compliance issues. This has resulted in people getting away with anything on Indian Roads and everybody seems to takes cues from the politicians to whome, roads are owned property with others tresspassing. Implementation of the measures like the one you have mentioned here could go a long way in increasing our road safety.

Govt may amend vehicle rules

Dipak Kumar Dash TNN

New Delhi: The government is likely to amend the Central Motor Vehicle Rules to ban vehicles from carrying rods and pipes protruding up to one metre beyond the body frame.
The Supreme Court had on Monday sought the Centre’s response after a PIL said thousands of motorists died every year in accidents caused by trucks parked recklessly on highways, many with iron rods protruding from their body frames.
Sources in the road transport ministry said they were considering whether Section 93 of the Rules could be done away with as such protruding materials were responsible for several accidents.
Section 93 of CMVR, 1989 allows goods vehicles to carry poles or rods or indivisible load “so long as the projecting part or parts do not exceed the distance of one metre beyond the rear most point of the motor vehicle”. However, this is followed mostly in the breach with rods and other material often protruding beyond two metres.
“When the CMVR was finalized, we did not have huge vehicles. That could have been the reason behind having this provision. Now, the situation has changed and we have big vehicles. There is no reason why this section can’t be amended so that we don’t have such a situation on highways. We also need to address how we can deal with the menace on city roads,” a road transport ministry official said.

This is in continuation to my earlier post!! Looks like that the government has finally woken up from its slumber , and is making an effort to checking the loss of innocent lives that are being lost every day to those spear like killer iron rods jutting out of trucks parked on dark highways with no markers !!
