Volvo 8400 CNG City Bus trials begin in Delhi

High Points

- The First Volvo CNG City Bus in India is introduced on New Delhi Roads.

- The Volvo City Bus, already operating in 12 cities of India (diesel only), will now commence in the national capital through its CNG version. Currently on a trial, the DTC will make a decision on fleet induction at the end of 2011.

- The CNG variant of the Volvo city bus is built at Bangalore.

- The CNG variant houses a new Automatic transmission from Volvo, called "Ecolife". Volvo states that a stronger retarder will make the CNG City bus jerk-free for passengers.

- Other features: Air suspension, climate control, Electronic Braking system, front under-run protection device, Disk Brakes, electro-pneumatic safety doors, hill start aid with grade ability, brake temperature warning and poor brake performance warning.

- The Volvo City Bus on trial is disabled friendly, providing easy step-less entry and features within for wheel chairs. The bus can lower itself at every stop for easier ingress / egress.

- These buses have an operating life of over 10 years.

This is great news!

Even though the current fleet (the green and red new buses) is great, a slightly smoother ride would be much appreciated.

The current Tata buses are so torquey that toppling passengers aren't uncommon!

I wonder if this move was driven by Tata's inability to supply buses at the pace desired by the DTC.

^The news say, Volvo will be used only for interstate only. I do not think CNG is readily available. Am I missing something?

^ I confused it with the article from HT that had interstate as well.

Volvo will bring back more people towards bus travel. I have sampled them in most EU countries and have to give them the credit of being innovative and producing really nice buses.

Update on the CNG - Volvo 8400!

"Swedish bus maker Volvo Bus Corporation, is set to launch Volvo 8400 low-floor CNG city bus in India during July-August this year, according to a Business Standard report.
The company would start production of these buses at its facility at Hoskote near Bangalore and they will be for commercial launch during the third quarter of 2012.
It was reported that the Volvo CNG is built with in-line 6-cylinder, inter-cooled, natural gas engine with turbocharger has optimum power-to-weight ratio and generates 280hp. The bus meets Euro-IV emission standards. The engine has 8.3L displacement with maximum power of 209 kW and peak torque of 1151 Nm. The CNG bus features in-built safety measures like active protection to cut off ignition system when refilling. The Volvo electrical system, connectors, wiring harnesses and multiplex including high standards of fire protection are built into the bus. "

Shot this when the bus was cooling off enroute from Trichy-Chennai.

Look at the mammoth fan to the left and the ac compressor at bottom right.
