SCOOP - Spotted a Tata All-Wheel-Drive Truck

I was on my way to Pune for the Indian Superbike Festival 2012.Took a tea break at the start of the Dehu Road. While having a cup of some nice tea, i saw this massive truck with On Test sticker coming my way.I quickly asked a friend to clicks few pictures.
It was a Tata truck. I think its an All Wheel drive, not sure here.May be a new truck for Indian Military.
The truck was fully loaded with Tyres and lots of heavy goods.
All i can say is, the truck looked massive. The driver had a very difficult time taking a U Turn. Took him almost 5 mins.

Re: Spotted a Tata new all Wheel drive Truck

Nice scoop. From the looks of the truck, it appears to be made for the army or the defence forces. This one doesn't look like it is going to be made for civilian use.

The fit and finish as well as the build quality look questionable though. The front end looks especially crude.

Re: Spotted a Tata new all Wheel drive Truck

Looking at the tyres I am quite sure its being tested for the defense forces. The thick side walls also seem to suggest it would spend its life in the mountains transporting men and machine.

Re: Spotted a Tata new all Wheel drive Truck

I agree with W.A.G.7 and Maverick1977. We know that Tata (and Mahindra) are now into defence supplies in a much bigger way. So this must be for the defence incl. Paramilitary forces. A nice time considering all the fuss about Tatra!

Re: Spotted a new Tata all Wheel drive Truck

Thanks for sharing, cabin looks crude but if well engineered, will make a formidable rival for Tatra.

Good time to enter market

Re: Spotted a new Tata all Wheel drive Truck

AH this is a mockery of an attempt to make a Tata look like an Oshkosh truck.

100% Sure it would not be for civilian use. Most civilian truck of this size come with multiple wheels per axle. % use of truks in 4X4 terrain is negligible.

Nice find, looks almost like the Tatra if you discount the body, must be for the defence forces

Yes, almost the same. But seriously, its really not that bad! When i first saw it, my jaws dropped because its massive. Plus the sound was crazy! i loved it!
I even thought of asking the driver if he is going to come back for another round. If he would have said yes, i would have requested him to take me inside the cabin..

Compare with this. If the quality is right we can save some foreign exchange.

Looks exactly the same.
If you compare the Tata and Tatra, is it correct to say the latter one being a European country will have a better quality?

The cabin looks very similar to this one.

Re: Spotted a new Tata all Wheel drive Truck

Actually the top pic makes sense - this monster can be only used to the fullest as a missile carrier - why would one carry load on this mean truck. The tub and dummy pay load is only a testing scale I think!

Re: Spotted a new Tata all Wheel drive Truck

Indian auto majors getting ToT from reputed International defence technology companies and serve our Army will be a better deal than getting public sector companies like beml do the Job(example: recent Tatra Trucks issue).

saw this page have lot more Tata,Ashok Leyland defence vehicles:

Re: SCOOP - Spotted a Tata All-Wheel-Drive Truck

It is a Tata 8*8 used as a missile launcher, usually carrying Pinaka rockets. Was displayed prominently at the DefExpo.

Cheers,

Re: SCOOP - Spotted a Tata All-Wheel-Drive Truck

Similar to Tatra trucks but may not be a replacement. With those long wheelbase it may not fare well off roads. Possibly for hauling huge armory where using Tatra might be an overkill. So even if it can do half of what the Tatra can do it can be a good indigenous supplement for the Army, saving a lot of money.
