Isuzu planning Rs 1000 crore plant in India. EDIT: Andhra Pradesh chosen for LCVs

Quote:
MUMBAI/HYDERABAD: Isuzu Motors Limited, is mulling an entry into India's fast growing small commercial vehicle and multi utility vehicle segment to take on Tata Motors Ace and Mahindra & Mahindra's utility vehicles. The $17.1 billion Japanese auto firm is planning a greenfield facility in India, which may entail an investment of over Rs 1,000 crore....

""A me-too offering won't work in India, Isuzu will have to study the market carefully and find a right niche which is large enough to cater to. According to me, there are plenty of them available. Is there an opportunity for a better segmented LCV? The answer is yes. Tata Motors convinced us with Ace, Ashok Leyland convinced us with Dost and there will be more specific application opportunity arising in the future with retail sector opening up. Isuzu will have to pick their niche carefully,"" said Jain

Isuzu is already in technology tie-up with Swaraj Mazda. From insiders in SML, I thought they were going to invest in that venture only.

Looks like they have decided to go their own path.

re: Isuzu planning Rs 1000 crore plant in India. EDIT: Andhra Pradesh chosen for LCVs

Japan’s Isuzu zeroes in on plant in Andhra Pradesh.

The India-specific announcement is expected on March 15 in Hyderabad. The plant will be ready for commercial production by 2015 and till then, the Japanese manufacturer will use the Hindustan Motors' Chennai car plant at Tiruvallur and General Motors' facility.

Quote:
"The initial plan is to roll out MU7 Choiz (a sports utility vehicle sporting a 3.0-litre engine) and V Cross, a 2.5-litre engine, mounted pick-up ," sources said. Isuzu could not be reached for comment. The homologation -- the process of certifying that a particular car is roadworthy and matches certain specified criteria laid out by the government for all vehicles made or imported into the country --was completed a few weeks ago at ARAI in Pune.
Sri City, though located in Andhra Pradesh, is just on the outskirts of Chennai. Isuzu will use the near shore advantage of Chennai's auto parts ecosystem to build its plant and India business.

Isuzu chooses Andhra Pradesh for its LCV manufacturing unit

Isuzu Motors has selected Andhra Pradesh as the manufacturing site for its Indian operations. Isuzu will set up the new manufacturing plant on a 100 acre site at Sri City in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The first vehicle manufactured here by Isuzu is scheduled to roll-out by early 2016. Until the new facility is ready, Isuzu will import its present models for India (MU-7 SUV & D-MAX pickups) as CBU’s. These will come from its manufacturing unit in Thailand.

Once the new production facility is complete by 2015, it will serve the Indian market as well as become an export hub for Isuzu. The company has rather ambitious plans to sell 80,000 units in India, with another 40,000 units slated for export once the factory is ready.

The Japanese automaker renowned for their Diesel engines is currently accepting bookings for its MU-7 SUV and D-MAX pickup trucks in South India. The butch looking MU-7 SUV is priced at approximately Rs 24 lakh, while the pickups have been priced at Rs 6.87 lakh (single cab) and Rs 8.07 lakh (double cab), ex-Hyderabad. Isuzu at present has only two showrooms in operation, the first located in Hyderabad and the second in Coimbatore.

The D-Max diesel pick-up is one great work horse. I have 4 of them running for my company at work sites here in Saudi Arabia and this vehicle just runs & runs & runs. Except the engine oil, filter and other routine stuff, nothing else is required. The ones coming to Saudi are also made in Thailand and hence ISUZU may bring them to India in CKD from Thailand benefiting on the free-trade agreement.

Contrapunto,

The Showroom is Mahavir Motors, and is on Road no.36 of Jubilee Hills. This is the old Mercedes Benz showroom. When you are going from Jubilee Hills check post to Madhapur, just a few hundred metres on the left is the showroom. Hope this information is useful to you.

The power situation in Andhra Pradesh is so bad that many companies are closing shop and shifting out. At this time I don't know how Isuzu chose AP. Good luck to them!

Isuzu hasn't chosen AP for anything and will not in the near future. They are going to manufacture some limited products in Hindustan motors plant and side by side they will expand capacity at their current plant in Ropar or Rupnagar in Punjab. This information is from someone who has made this decision.

Re: Isuzu planning Rs 1000 crore plant in India. EDIT: Andhra Pradesh chosen for LCVs

Manikjeet,

Isuzu has chosen Andhra Pradesh. The news is official now. You may refer to the Hindu dated 21-3-2013 for information which can be found on page one. And it is not only LCVs that they will manufacture at Siri City but also SUVs starting with the MU7. The news of contract manufacture with HM has not been confirmed and they are not making their SUVs with SML.

John,
There is no state in India which is not suffering from power deficit. Isuzu has been given a complete tax exemption for many years. In fact, the Hindu had reported some days ago that it was not only Isuzu but even Mahindra has chosen a location near its existing plant in Zaheerabad (about 1000 acres of land) for the manufacture of its upcoming small car. This was supposed to have been formally announced on the 6th of March along with the launch of the e2o but for some reason Mahindra has delayed its announcement.

If you've noticed, the number of Isuzu buses operating on the roads have been on the steady decline over the period.
How is the company operating currently? Does it have any dealers, where is the sales office/parts warehouse & are the buses fully imported?

Leaving aside the parts supply bottlenecks, how's the feedback on the performance of the product?
