Strange Tata Truck at ARAI.

Saw this strange truck at ARAI yesterday. It had its engine mounted at the rear, behind the bed!

Also, the cabin was mounted ahead of the front wheel, instead of the usual above it. When I peered through the engine bay in the cab, it was empty, except for a battery, kept at the foot of the drivers seat.

The exhaust of the truck...

Wonder what purpose does this strange configuration serve?

The Volvo B7R bus has competition. That could definitely be the prototype / testing for a new rear engined bus.

Even I thought the same thing, that it was just a chassis study. But they already have a rear engined bus, and its already doing duty with PMT.

And I also saw a B7R LE low floor bus right next to this one. Its an automatic!! The shifter was mounted behind the steering, American style.
Heres a hazy pic of the same. It was taken @ twilight through a glass door with a mediocre quality camera phone, hence you cant make out much. But you can notice the absence of a gear lever.

Tata was supposed to make a bus chassis with rear engine for luxury coaches. This may be it. First they did it with the BEST Low Floor bus in Mumbai and PMT as sajo said. This must be their next intercity transport bus!

definately this is the new bus chassis from tata
i have worked in ACGL where those BEST & PMT buses were built.from given pic this chassis looks diffrent from those used for said buses.previously chassis were coming without cabins.
i think tata's globus buses are not working so i hope this bus might click

Well it is TATA definitly. Thought the placement of the engine suggests a bus chassis, i wonder whcih class cause their starbus project already is rear engined. Hope the final body looks better than what it has presently.
