2012-13 Sales: Overview of the Commercial Vehicle Industry

Disclaimer: Data pulled from official sources like company websites. The data may not be completely correct incase some manufacturers report domestic & export together.

Overall the Indian GDP slipped from its peaks of 7-8% to a stumping low of approx 5.5%.
Needless to say, the government tried to control its expenses but not in the austerity way; but dumping additional burden on the public. Though this was hailed a good move, the after effects were spiralling inflation, peaking interest rates (to contain the demand and thus control inflation) and deregulation of fuel pricing.
The CV industry was the first inline to brave these effects with increasing fuel costs necessitated the passing on the burden to the consumer but the overcapacity in the market averted this.
Naturally, the fleet operators decided to hold on their horses by delaying purchases. Combined with high interest rates, buying of the trucks was a little difficult in the overall slowing scenario.

Despite all gloom and uncertainty, the launch of new products to attract customers did not slow down.
TML launched 37 tonne rigid truck, the affordable PRIMA LX range, Ultra bus & Divo luxury bus.
ALL launched its 37 tonne rigid truck, its revamped 3118 truck, the DOST and recently the OBD II compliant BS IV CV.
Mahindra tried to consolidate its business by holding new product launches but expanded the variants on existing platforms like Maxximo Van etc.
A stark observation was that while the fleet owners tightened their purses, SCV & LCV sales picked up due to new model launch and increasing first time owners aspirations to start a venture of their own.
This was the only saviour in the otherwise dull year.
Statistics are as below. Hope you enjoy.

Actually the absence of the CV sales was one reason for me to collate it all!
From next month you can expect month wise sales.
Unfortunately the model wise sales are not provided openly but some magazines like Commercial Vehicle get that data after few months.

Though model wise break-up is not available, the above chart is good enough to start with.
Will look forward for your monthly updates.

Great initiative. Appreciate the effort put.

From the above it is apparent that Mahindra is dominant in the Small CV segment, whereas Tata is good in the M & HCV. ALL seems to be slipping (but Dost is getting stronger every month). No wonder Mahindra overtook ALL as the No. 2 CV maker.

Thanks for the appreciation Sir
Actually Mahindra was already the No 2 CV player for a long time due to different playing field altogether!
TML is the leader in sub 1 tonne payload SCVs (Ace>Maxximo> Piaggio)
Mahindra is leader in sub 2 tonne payload SCVs (Bolero+Genio>Tata RX+Xenon RX+ SuperAce> DOST)
TML is leader in sub 5 tonne payload LCVs (TML> Eicher)
M&HCV: not exactly a clear winner between ALL & TML

I have defined the segments as PAYLOADS hence it is a little difficult to delve into each segment. Regret any inconvenience caused.
