Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

Mod Note: The Stile's Official Review has been uploaded at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the review thread.

Ashok Leyland has launched the Stile MPV at a price between Rs. 7.49 - 9.29 lakhs (Ex-showroom, Mumbai)

High Points:
  • The Stile MPV will be available in two seating options: 8-seater variant and a 7-seater variant with captain seats.
  • Available only in a diesel engine option powered by the 1.5L K9K engine producing 75 BHP of power & 185 Nm of torque.
  • ARAI fuel efficiency rating of 19.5 kmpl.
  • No ABS, EBD+BA. Misses out on essential safety features.
  • 2 years or 50,000 kms warranty & an optional 1 year or 50,000 kms extended warranty.
  • This will be Ashok Leyland's second light vehicle offering, the first one was the Dost pick up truck which has sold more than 55,000 units across the country.
  • As we all know, the Stile has been jointly developed by Ashok Leyland & Nissan. The Stile will roll out from Nissan's manufacturing plant at Oragadam, near Chennai.
  • The Stile will be sold via 130 Ashok Leyland LCV outlets across the country.

The front grille and smoked headlamps are major differentiators from the Nissan Evalia.

Tail lamps have been revised. Also the reflector strips on the boot-lid seen on the Evalia are missing on the Stile.

Interior design is similar to the Evalia. The glove box gets a lid over here, open in the Evalia.

Great going but its sort of hard to get used to the AL logo on a private vehicle. I don't know but seeing that Ashok Leyland on the rear hatch lid sort of evokes a hard to describe feeling. But the pricing seems to be spot on and since its all diesel, will ertiga get a run for its money now? Overall seems to be slightly better than the Evalia on the looks.

Re: Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

What is the purpose of this vehicle? Cater to Taxi segment? But then doesn't the Chevy Enjoy appear more VFM than this? If I remember there was some talk of them only offering this to Fleet operators and not necessarily private buyers.

On the other hand the last pic of the engine bay area can be tagged as "Spot the Engine" !

Ashok Leyland Stile MPV to target fleet operators
Ashok Leyland Stile MPV will be sold exclusively through the brand’s commercial vehicle dealerships says ACI. I am sure yellow plate fleet owners would buy this a lot

Re: Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

Renault would not get this vehicle as this is a JV only between Nissan and AL.

And it also ensures that there would be no small cars with AL badging, Also no Duster platform vehicles in AL badge

Nissan seems to be ventured cleverly with different segment of vehicles with different companies.

Re: Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

Thank you for the information, Parrys.

At that price point and the backing of two good brands, I find it attractive to convert this into a long distance tourer(on the likes of Recreational Vehicles) after making some changes. I suppose the ASC reach is a plus for Stile.

I will visit the showroom and do a test ride to check the feasibility of the modifications.

Re: Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

This and the Evalia looks exactly similar from the side profiles!

The driver doesn't get an armrest for his seat but the rear seats do. Strange! He is the one who is going to need it the most IMO especially with a console mounted gearshift. It might get tiring during the city commutes.

Re: Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

These days its more like one car being sold by different manufacturers just by updating head/tail lamps & grill, sometimes with added features and sometimes stripped down!

For me Stile is nothing but base version (read as poor sister) of Evalia.

Does this happen only in India or do we have similar examples around the world?
I mean same car being sold by 2 different manufacturers.

This has been happening all over the world.
There is also a commercial variant of the Evalia/NV200 rebadged as Chevrolet Express in US

Think it's Chevrolet City Express. Chevrolet Express is quite a bigger vehicle.

Re: Ashok Leyland Stile launched @ 7.49 lakhs

Any pictures or update on the middle row window pane? It was supposed to be a sliding type on the Stile right?
This was one of the biggest grouses on the Evalia!! And if Nissan or AL has not paid any heed, I foresee a Evalia fate for the Stile very soon!

Wrong! If you observe closely, the Evalia gets body-coloured door handles, while the Stile gets black door handles. Subtle yet significant.

Alright, time for the smiley:

So, what's exactly different in the Stile from the Evalia, other than the badging?

Also an interesting question: If it did come to the after-sales service, whom would you trust more, Ashok Leyland or Nissan?

Well, keeping the two vehicles same gives them a competitive advantage. If the Stile failed, Nissan could always stop producing Stile and convert them into Evalias. If the Evalia failed, Nissan could always stop producing Evalias and convert them into Stile.

The last vehicle to be badged Stile didn't do too well: The Fiat Palio Stile. Let's see if this Stile does better.

All in all to me it looks like a half-hearted attempt by AL to test the passenger car market. Something I would be wary about if I decided to go for this car.
