From the comments in one of the forums where this video was posted -

Trucks are going in reverse is also about not running over Van Damme (in case he falls)
I think that makes sense.

Exactly. He wouldn't get torn off or anything. But given that the trucks are travelling in reverse, he'd definitely have a hard time balancing himself and that may result in a nasty fall if things went awry. Name: fing03.gif

Yeah. That one definitely makes you sit up and swear!

Though not as dramatic or alarming as the Volvo, Mercedes demonstrated a similar system on their Actros trucks.

Cheers!
This one seemed a lot more tougher than the one on the Volvo Trucks, the scooters not so balanced if something had gone wrong, that guy would have been in some trouble.

How many versions of these splits are yet come

No VFX? Superman can fly, spiderman can spin a web, rajini can do all that with style.

Having a safety harness doesn't help you do the trick, so it is not a special effect. It is mandated by insurance companies.

PS: Many parkour guys can pull this off, but they don't have the brand equity of JCVD.

JCVD, I am a fan! He is amazing. He can do it. But, when you are wired, it is SFX. Cliff hanger was the first movie to use that tech (atleast extensively) . In VFX terms its called wire removal. 360 degree kicks by all our heros? exactly done the same way. It has Post. If they were on a harness as some want to call it, whats the risk in it? Why dont they show him hanging on the harness? The moment one removes that, it is VFX.
As usual we deprive the credit for the excellent work of the SFX and VFX artists
But, yes, Vandame, is very well trained and a lot of us are his fans.

Probably, someone from the VFX fraternity had a funny moment!

Re: Volvo Trucks Ad - Split by Van Damme

That JVCD ad looked good. But he's still propped directly on the trucks. And flat ground below.

Here's a more risky ad:

Hats off to the ballerina ! Though she's got safety harness, it needed tremendous concentration to do that walk. And before reaching the tunnel.
