Rumour: Mahindra to build Bajaj RE60-rivalling quadricycle Mahindra and Mahindra is rumoured to be working on a quadricycle, a new commercial vehicle which will rival the upcoming Bajaj RE60. The C101, as the project has been codenamed, is likely to hit the roads in 2017.
Mahindra is said to be investing in the region of Rs. 100-150 crore for the development of the quadricycle, which will be built on an all-new platform. It is expected to be produced at it's Zaheerabad manufacturing facility. The company is reported to have imported a quadricycle from Europe for benchmarking. The C101 is likely to be powered by a 200-300 cc engine in both, single-cylinder and twin-cylinder options.
About 4 lakh three-wheelers are sold every year and most of these are autoricshaws. In the coming years, quadricycles, which have hard tops and doors, are likely to replace autorickshaws as they are believed to be safer. This makes Mahindra's plan of producing a quadricycle seem logical.
Quadricycles cannot be used to replace personal cars and are to be driven as commercial vehicles within the municipal limits of a city.
