Now, a self-driving truck from Daimler

Autonomous vehicles have been frequent features in recent news reports. However, while passenger vehicles from multiple brands have been presented and tested, Daimler Trucks has become the world's first manufacturer to be granted a road license for an autonomous heavy-duty truck.

The truck, labelled the “Freightliner Inspiration Truck” is based on the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution. The vehicle made its first journey on the US highway 15 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The truck is equipped with the intelligent Highway Pilot system, which includes a front radar, a stereo camera and assistance systems such as the Adaptive Cruise Control+. The state of Nevada licensed two Freightliner Inspiration Trucks for regular operation on public roads.

Re: Now, a self-driving truck from Daimler

just compared the last picture with the tech stuff and the instrument clusters on the Daimler's to the trucks on the Indian streets. Realized that we would be needing software engineers to maneuver these Daimler on Indian roads.

Impressive though.

Re: Now, a self-driving truck from Daimler

At last there is hope that someday, we will have trucks in India which

- will not hog the right-most lane while doing 28.3 km/hr
- will not try overtaking another truck which is doing 28.2 km/hr
- will not stop by the side of highways for a nature's break in the bushes
- will not switch on the right turn indicator to let you pass
- will not park in the middle of the night with no lights on, plotting to kill you
- will not fall asleep and climb over the median
- will not take sharp turns without signalling to enter dhabas
- will not spit / wash hands from the windows
- will not bribe the cops and RTO agents
- will not run you over by reversing without looking
- will not overload and kill themselves in 2 years
- will not adulterate their fuel and smog the air
- will not skip on maintenance and wait till they breakdown in the middle of the road

Waiting for that day.

Union cheers as trucks kept out of U.S. self-driving legislation!

Source & full article

Quote:
The Teamsters union on Friday praised House lawmakers for keeping self-driving commercial trucks out of a proposed bill aimed at speeding deployment of the advanced technology for cars.

The U.S. House Energy and Committee on Thursday unanimously approved a bill that would hasten the use of self-driving cars without human controls and bar states from blocking autonomous vehicles. The measure only applies to vehicles under 10,000 pounds and not large commercial trucks.
