After a cementing a strong position in the automobiles and two-wheeler industry, Honda is now aiming for the skies, literally! Honda Aircraft Company's first project has been the HondaJet - a light business jet aircraft, which claims to be the fastest, highest-flying, quietest and most fuel-efficient jet in its class.

This is Honda's first commercial aircraft which is powered by two GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines. It is equipped with a Honda-specific Garmin G3000, all-glass avionics system composed of 3 14" landscape-format displays and dual touch-screen controllers. The maximum cruise speed at FL300 (30,000 feet) is rated at 420KTAS (777.84 km/h) and maximum cruise altitude is 43,000 feet. It can seat either 4 or 5 passengers, in addition to the 2 crew members (depending on the configuration). The exterior dimensions of the aircraft are 4.54*12.12*12.99 meters for the height*wing span*length respectively. The internal dimensions of the cabin are 1.46*5.43*1.52 meters for the height*length*width respectively.

Within a two months of its sales announcement, the HondaJet was wholeheartedly welcomed by more than 100 individual customers in 2006, who were eager to own this $3.65 million aircraft (price as of today stands at USD 4.5 million). Due to delays in critical components, approvals and certifications, first flight targets and customer deliveries kept delaying. The first production aircraft took off only in October 2014. It wore a deep pearl green paint job with a gold stripe.

Honda Aircraft Company, LLC, is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Honda Motor Co. Inc, founded in 2006; based out of North Carolina. Even before deliveries of the HondaJet have begun, Honda Aircraft has established a strong dealer network across North America, Canada, Mexico and Europe and is aggressively conducting demonstration tours for prospective buyers.

"GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines"

Wait a minute. Did Honda develop these engines in collaboration with GE ? If so that's impressive. Making jet engines is the toughest part in airplane manufacturing.

Just ask the folks at DRDO trying to make a 100% "indigenous" Tejas..

Somewhere I read that the reason the founder of Honda kept their wing logo just half all these days, was because his dream was to build an aircraft to complete the wings.

Not sure if Honda is going to change their wing logo now after getting into the aircraft business.

Thanks for the information S2!!! Interesting to know this.

In India, Mahindra & Mahindra too has plans to manufacture regional / business jets in India.

Let us see if the automotive manufacturers like Honda and Mahindra change the culture in aerospace industry in the long run.

My best wishes to Honda. I really do hope they bring to the business aircraft industry the same after sales service standards that they (Honda) have in the automobile business. For those of us who are familiar with civil aviation the A.S.S. of most business aircraft & helicopter OEMs is average at best and the bogey of air safety is used cheerfully to jack up astronomical maintenance bills. The Honda Jet has been in the making for several years and I have been seeing its cabin on display at EBACE Geneva for some years now. Happy it is off to a flying start finally.

AlphaTauri inspired HondaJet

Great achievement by Honda.
The range is about 2000 km, which makes it unsuitable for international flights. Hence it might be used for domestic charter by corporates etc. It'd be interesting to know more about how this product performed during the Covid crisis that has destroyed the aircraft industry. Companies in aviation engine manufacturing and maintenance are laying off people by the hundreds. Hopefully this being a small plane won't get affected by the same market forces.

It's a VLJ (very light jet) never designed for international travel but with a bit of planning and with a lot of stops, it can be flown around the world as this couple did-

Hondajet is a very small operation backed by a very large corporation so it may not be that affected by COVID but smaller companies that make VLJs like embraer & cessna will definitely be adversely affected.

VLJs never became popular in the corporate charter industry because they do not offer stand up room, in hondajet, cabin height is barely 5 ft. MDs & CEOs prefer a full sized cabin where they don't have to crouch.

As a flying taxi, VLJs are too expensive, carry only 4 passengers and have higher operating costs as compared to similarly priced turboprops from beechcraft or pilatus (which can carry twice the no. of passengers while burning less fuel).

Honda Aircraft Company (HACI), an aircraft business subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., announced on September 8 that it has delivered the latest "HondaJet Elite" to Red Bull's F1 team, Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda.

On Honda's official website, photos of the HondaJet Elite with Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda specifications have been released.

Do private aviation owners have the option of getting it serviced at non OEMS just like you'd take a car to a private mechanic as opposed to the dealership ? Could we skip on costs if doing that given I owned a private aircraft hypothetically ?

Theoretically yes but that MRO will have difficulty accessing the engineering drawings and technical inputs from the OEM. That is something you need all the time. Nor will it have ready and timely access to service bulletins on safety or performance improvements that come from time to time. Also the warranty will get jeopordized. You don't want to invest say $15mm buying a pre-owned mid-sized biz jet and then try and save $15000 on maintenance when your annul maintenance+spares+pilot+fuel costs could be in the $3 to $5 million bracket depending on hours flown. It is a very expensive form of cost cutting.

A non-authorized MRO could do a fine maintenance job on say a Cessna 172, the most basic airplane commonly available. But I wouldn't risk it even with a more complex single-engine propeller driven machine like say a Cirrus SR22. Hope this helps.

HondaJet 2600 Concept unveiled – first light jet plane capable of non-stop, transcontinental US flight:

Quote:

The Honda Aircraft Company has unveiled the HondaJet 2600 Concept at the 2021 NBAA Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), where a mock-up of the new aircraft was shown as the next generation of the company’s lightweight business jet plane. HondaJet has been having quite a run, with 31 jets sold in 2020 marking the fourth straight year of being the most delivered jet in its class.

The HondaJet 2600 Concept has been touted as the world’s first light jet capable of non-stop, transcontinental flight over the United States with a range of 2,625 nautical miles (4,861 km) with one crew member and four passengers, with a rated high-speed cruise of 450 knots (833 km/h) and a maximum operating altitude of 47,000 feet (14,325 m), says Honda.

Take-off distance is rated at 1,006 m, while landing distance is 762 m, according to the company. Maximum take-off weight for the HondaJet 2600 Concept is 7,938 kg.

Its over-the-wing engine mounting configuration enables the maximising of passenger space within the cabin compared to conventional light jets, says Honda, while its cabin pressurisation is also claimed to be class-leading with a cabin altitude of 6,363 feet (1,939 m) at its operational ceiling of 47,000 feet (14,325 m).
Quote:

In terms of exterior dimensions, length is 17.62 m and height is 4.84 m, while wingspan is 17.29 m. To serve its business traveller clientele, the cabin of the HondaJet 2600 Concept offers three types of modular, highly customisable layouts, Honda added. Total baggage volume is 120 cubic feet (3.4 cubic metres).

The HondaJet 2600 Concept is also the first transcontinental passenger jet designed for single-pilot operation, says Honda, enabled through automated systems including autothrottle and autobrake, it says, while operational safety is further bolstered with an intuitive, high-tech interface that reduces pilot workload.

Further assistance systems include advanced steering augmentation, and runway overrun awareness and alerting. In terms of occupancy, the HondaJet 2600 Concept can be configured for one air crew and 10 passengers, or two air crew and nine passengers.
