Default HondaJet: Honda's first Airplane

After a cementing a strong position in the automobiles and two-wheeler industry, Honda is now aiming for the skies, literally! Honda Aircraft Company's first project has been the HondaJet - a light business jet aircraft, which claims to be the fastest, highest-flying, quietest and most fuel-efficient jet in its class.

This is Honda's first commercial aircraft which is powered by two GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines. It is equipped with a Honda-specific Garmin G3000, all-glass avionics system composed of 3 14" landscape-format displays and dual touch-screen controllers. The maximum cruise speed at FL300 (30,000 feet) is rated at 420KTAS (777.84 km/h) and maximum cruise altitude is 43,000 feet. It can seat either 4 or 5 passengers, in addition to the 2 crew members (depending on the configuration). The exterior dimensions of the aircraft are 4.54*12.12*12.99 meters for the height*wing span*length respectively. The internal dimensions of the cabin are 1.46*5.43*1.52 meters for the height*length*width respectively.

Within a two months of its sales announcement, the HondaJet was wholeheartedly welcomed by more than 100 individual customers in 2006, who were eager to own this $3.65 million aircraft (price as of today stands at USD 4.5 million). Due to delays in critical components, approvals and certifications, first flight targets and customer deliveries kept delaying. The first production aircraft took off only in October 2014. It wore a deep pearl green paint job with a gold stripe.

Honda Aircraft Company, LLC, is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Honda Motor Co. Inc, founded in 2006; based out of North Carolina. Even before deliveries of the HondaJet have begun, Honda Aircraft has established a strong dealer network across North America, Canada, Mexico and Europe and is aggressively conducting demonstration tours for prospective buyers.

"GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines"

Wait a minute. Did Honda develop these engines in collaboration with GE ? If so that's impressive. Making jet engines is the toughest part in airplane manufacturing.

Just ask the folks at DRDO trying to make a 100% "indigenous" Tejas..

Somewhere I read that the reason the founder of Honda kept their wing logo just half all these days, was because his dream was to build an aircraft to complete the wings.

Not sure if Honda is going to change their wing logo now after getting into the aircraft business.

Thanks for the information S2!!! Interesting to know this.

In India, Mahindra & Mahindra too has plans to manufacture regional / business jets in India.

Let us see if the automotive manufacturers like Honda and Mahindra change the culture in aerospace industry in the long run.

My best wishes to Honda. I really do hope they bring to the business aircraft industry the same after sales service standards that they (Honda) have in the automobile business. For those of us who are familiar with civil aviation the A.S.S. of most business aircraft & helicopter OEMs is average at best and the bogey of air safety is used cheerfully to jack up astronomical maintenance bills. The Honda Jet has been in the making for several years and I have been seeing its cabin on display at EBACE Geneva for some years now. Happy it is off to a flying start finally.
