Uttar Pradesh might soon get biomethane buses from Scania

Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) is considering the addition of a fleet of buses that run on biomethane gas, for intra-city transport services. The most unique quality of these buses is that these are fueled by human sewage and household waste.

So how does it work? Human sewage and food waste is treated to produce methane-rich gas. Oxygen-starved bacteria break down biodegradable material to produce this gas. This gas is compressed and stored in tanks. To fuel the bus, carbon dioxide is removed from this biogas and propane is added. Impurities are removed too, to ensure that the emissions are odorless. The body waste of 100 humans is said to be sufficient for these buses to cover a distance of 200 kms.

The buses will serve 75 districts and discussions with Swedish bus maker, Scania are currently going on. Scania is said to manage the entire operations which includes running and maintenance of these buses, routes and timings as well as other costs of fuel and driver compensation. UPSRTC would pay the company a pre-determined fee per km (between Rs. 60 and Rs. 75).

Earlier this year, in March, UK's first 'poo bus' went into service. To know more about the bus, click here.

That's an amazing initiative by UPSRTC, hope this move turns out to be profitable for both parties involved.

I hope KSRTC does something similar.

So now UP will literally run on 'hot air'

In all seriousness though is Scania not out of Spain?

=> Scania was founded in 1891 in Malmö, in the Swedish province of Skåne and the company's head office has been in Södertälje, in the province of Södermanland, since 1912 in SWEDEN. It's a Swedish Company.

Scania is a short form for scandanavia, or the block of 3 Nordic countries of North Europe.

coming to the fuel in this particular case, I hope it is processed. Daily operations in high ambient temperatures, humidity and dust factor will be a new for this experiment.

Thanks S2!!! for sharing this piece of information.

A proper underground drainage system is essential for this project. Such system shall collect all the sewage to a common well / tank in the bio-methane plant. Most of UP (and most of other big cities in our country) unfortunately do not have a proper drainage system. IFAIK, underground drainage is laid in UP only in few cities (like Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad), that too partially.

Let us see, to what extent does the project get implemented. Nevertheless, appreciate that the UP Govt. is thinking towards sustainable development.

I did spot a fancy bus on the road, which was Scania. Now maybe this was one of these. I was wondering since when do we get Scania in UP!

On a lighter note: Maybe this will be good use for all the hot air released by our politicos, and of course their cattle (remember Azam's stolen buffalos)!

Generating and managing continuous fuel supply would be a challenge. Even in villages people have stopped using cattle poo powered bio-gas plants which was in vogue 30 years ago. Much widespread use of LPG is to blame.

@srishiva; Also over here Biogas production almost stops in winters (too cold).
