Ashok Leyland @ Auto Expo 2016

Note from Mod : Ashley2's report has been merged with some of Anshuman & Eddy's photos.

4940 E6 Truck Launched

Ashok leyland launched India's first Euro6 Tractor Captain 4940 in Auto Expo 2016.
Quote:
Inspired by the ‘Made in India’, the 4940 Euro VI truck is built to exacting standards, using latest engineering and technological knowledge and meets the strict Euro VI emission norms. These norms demand a dramatic reduction in NOx and particulate matter, as low as one-tenth compared to existing Euro III. Achieving these norms requires a significant leap in technological capability and a strong dose of Indian ingenuity. The 4940 Euro 6 truck does this using Indian innovation and offers world-class norms at Indian costs. Made by Indians for India and the world, Ashok Leyland is proud to dedicate this truck to the nation
This is powered by Neptune 8L, engine producing 400hp power and 1600 Nm of Torque. Ashokleyland haven't disclosed the way the E6 is achieved but still it could be an indigenous technology with a combination of SCR.
The Cab is a high deck double sleeper Captain cab with fully suspended and tilt able options. The truck features Cruise control, ABS, Alloy wheels etc.

Hybus:

This is basically Low Entry CNG hybrid and is a next version of the Hybus which was displayed at the 2010 Auto Expo, as a plug in.

The Current product uses Micro capacitors to store energy. An engine which runs constantly at a given rpm charges the Micro capacitors and it drives the wheels.

Sunshine School Bus

This is part of the newer range of school buses from Ashok Leyland. It is a two step entry school bus and I guess this could be the first purpose-built school bus by any Indian manufacturer. The chassis and body are all-new with lot of inputs from its Optare subsidiary especially with its very less FOH (front over-hang) which they claim makes it very convenient to maneuver in small and narrow roads. Engine is same as existing 4-cylinder with EGR.

Guru

This is actually a makeover from the existing Boss range, but serious efforts have been put in to make it look distinct, as can be seen in the front facia. This is basically a 9T and 12T truck, purpose-built for light cargo where fuel performance is a prime requirement.

Understand this will be positioned below the Boss and will be more of an application specific product.

Good to see that AL is ready for Euro-6 norms which are slated to be brought in directly, without going to Euro-5. Is this a production-ready version, or just a concept?

Would be great to see more pics of the Captain 4940, especially the interiors.

Brilliant, this one meaty looking truck. Why are we not having detailed coverage of commercial vehicles at the Auto Expo.

I am sure there would be some brilliant stalls from Scania, Volvo, Tata motors etc.

I see a HYBUS (Hybrid Bus?) next to this truck. Would love to see some details on this please and then experts can compare it against similar offerings from others.

re: Ashok Leyland @ Auto Expo 2016

I'm assuming that this is either only a display only concept or a product developed solely for export market. Can anyone shed more light on this.

Is it Micro capacitors or Supercapacitors?

So, the Hybus is a Series Hybrid. Do you have any info on the CNG engine - have they downsized it, like the NBFL/New Routemaster has done (Cummins 4.5L ISBe 4-cyl E5 185hp)?

This one is really unique, though we see specialized school buses outside India, the ones we had like the popular Eicher Skyline or Tata Starbus versions of school buses, were mere yellowpainted and interior changed normal people carrier. You always needed someone to help small kids climb the steps.

From what I see, this should make it easy to board and step out. Cheer AL for this.

Re: Ashok Leyland @ Auto Expo 2016

Good job by AL developing a proper school bus, few points they should adapt from buses in other countries are.
1. Fixed lower 2/3rd or 3/4th windows, and sliding glass only in upper 1/3rd or 1/4th.
This ensures ventilation through windows yet prevents children risking putting hands out.
2. Pneumatic operated retractable additional foot step connected to door operation.
3. Option of smaller lower placed seats in front 1/3rd, slightly larger ones in middle and full sized ones in the rear. This allows different size seats for children from different classes. This has to be an option, as some schools may not have students of all classes.

I always wondered whether a long FOH (or more precisely a long snoot in front of the driver as in some of the old trucks here in India) on a school bus is good or bad?. I remember reading somewhere that a long snoot may reduce the risk of injuries to the driver and the front passengers in the event of a head-on collision. If this is true then I think its a must-have-feature at-least in School buses. I have observed that, most of the school buses in US have a long snoot in-front of them. Is it a safety mechanism or just a design trend?
