Volvo just broke the land speed record with its truck. The simply mad Iron Knight.

Some figures for you to digest:
Engine: 13 Liter, mid mounted diesel with 4 turbochargers
Power/Torque: 2400 hp/6000 Nm.
0-100 km/h: 4.6 sec
Gearbox: i-Shift Dual Clutch (12 speed standard)

These numbers are simply mind boggling. To put into perspective, the specific output of the engine in a 1.3 liter specification would bring 240 hp & 600 Nm. A bit more than our national diesel engine, right? To see a truck spin its wheels on he start line and power oversteer is simply ridiculous. As you guys will seen in the video below, it's way faster than the helicopter!

Thanks for sharing. 2400 horse power is a lot of power by any standards. To put matters in perspective here are some well known mobile platforms....


The famous Spitfire fighter of WW2 fame. Early models were powered by 1100hp Rolls Royce Merlins. A typical variant was powered by 1400hp Merlins. The most evolved versions only carried ~2000hp.


The Arjun battle tank - 1400hp MTU engine. And it weighs over 58 tonnes.


Best of all the HAL Druv helicopter with 2 TM333 Turbomeca engines at ~2000 to 2200 hp total.

Congrats Volvo.

Almost 300 kmph in a truck. And that too with a standard transmission handing around 6000Nm of torque.

Impressive, in one word. Would be interesting to know more about the engineering that went into this truck - the powertrain, chassis systems, tyres - everything needs a lot more attention than the same things going into a much lighter car or purpose-built racing vehicle.

V-16 Turbo-supercharged 2-stroke diesel engine, with over a 100 tons resting on 6 powered axles, generating ~2400hp and 30 T of tractive effort.

If you see volvo videos on their YouTube channel, one can see their superb engineering. i-shift is a remarkable technology. The recent ones come with crawler gears that can handle massive loads. In another video, a stock Volvo truck pulled 750 tonnes! A 750Hp truck pulling 750 tonnes.

No doubt Volvo generally rules the heavy truck segment across Europe. Even their cars are supposed to be the safest around which speaks enough about their engineering skills. BTW the Volvo insignia depicts the seat belt as IIRC they were the first ones to come up with them. Their trucks not only being capable are a delight to look at as well.

Slight correction there. Daimler Trucks is the market leader in the medium and heavy duty trucks in EU, as per the press release made on Jan 7th
