Air Force C-130J Transport Aircraft lands on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway

The most famous C-130 of them all as far as Im concerned; Fat Albert. The support aircraft for the US Navy Blue Angels. These guys are part of the show and boy do they deliver. Look how they throw this plane around! This is epic!

Lots of video's on Fat Albert out there on YouTube

Here another one, check out how aggressively the pilot moves the yoke over. But then check how precise the plane rolls and stops rolling at the exact bank he wants/needs!

If I remember correctly, it was one Squadron Leader Reddy who did this. He was probably disoriented and landed on the highway by mistake. It was a safe landing though, with no damage to aircraft or any private property or vehicles. The aircraft was brought back (you guessed it) on a flat bed truck.
Totally off topic.
The name Reddy reminded me of a Mahindra TUV 500 whatever I saw today.

Using the RANGE ROVER type font, one Reddy bloke had a sticker on the Bonnet lip area.

It read as: REDDY'S ROVER.

I thought it was brilliant.

Another gem. I saw a swift with 2 stickers above each brake light. The one on the right said - right side.
The one on the left said - suicide

Just getting my coat

This old article says 21 highway sections have already been identified
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...w/54908033.cms

Such sections of highways need to be maintained impeccably. Also, it is likely to be "reinforced" (if there is such a term in road construction) since they have to bear the load of 20 to 35 tonne Su30 MKI landing at 200+ kmph.

Last time, Mirage 2000 did a touch and go landing on 3+3 lane highway, with a road divider in the middle! However, I don't think C-130J will be able to land here.

I do not think you are far off from the mark. There is no sixth gen fighter aircraft development taking place in the world. From engineering point of view the need for human in the cockpit has been obviated about 10 years ago. Even mothballed aircraft can be re engineered to fly as UCAVs.

The geographic depth that our country possess coupled with range and endurance capability of our aircraft along with force multiplier capabilities of AWACS and AAR such exercises have many other aims to fulfill least of which is building some tactical capability.

The Indian Air Force C130J Super Hercules conducted a landing on NH925A in Jalore, Rajasthan yesterday on an emergency landing strip of the highway. The Chief of Air Staff along with the Defence Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh and MoRTH minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari were on that plane.

Re: Air Force C-130J Transport Aircraft lands on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway

Nice to learn from an aviation enthusiast's perspective, but why the political show with ministers et al? This should have been a mere 5-line article in a newspaper. Apart from showcasing the fact that a Hercules can land on unprepared strips, the event doesn't carry much significance from the general public perspective at all. And seriously, what's so new about it? The IAF carried out landings on rough strips in Dakotas (hardly a military plane by original design) to support troop movement during the 1947 Kashmir crisis . Military transport planes (especially turboprop) are designed to operate from rough/short strips.

I have never seen the US Defence secretary or Transport Secretary fly in a Hercules with their Joint Chief and land on a highway strip in Arizona, in full public spectacle. Its too childish as far as I am concerned. Sorry to be a bit harsh here. Indian military power needs to projected such that it is FELT in the right place by the right people, not always "seen".

Re: Air Force C-130J Transport Aircraft lands on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway

This was indeed a good achievement by IAF.

Have a few queries for this.

In normal road operation, will the drums as shown will serve as lane dividers or will there be something else.?

Next is, how soon can this expressway be prepared for aircraft operations.?
Will it be possible if a commercial aircraft is having some trouble, can it land on this expressway by quickly preparing it?

thank you in advance.

Re: Air Force C-130J Transport Aircraft lands on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway

PM Modi will be landing on the emergency airstrip on the Purvanchal Expressway on 16th November (to be inaugurated on the 16th November). He will be taking the IAF C130J as his flight. The airstrip is 3.3kms long located near Sultanpur.

Quote:
Purvanchal Expressway is an under-construction 340.8 km long, 6-lane wide access-controlled expressway in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The expressway will connect Chand Saray village near Gosainganj in Lucknow district with Haydaria village on NH-31 in Ghazipur district. It is being developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). According to UPEIDA, it will be inaugurated on 16 November 2021.

The project was announced by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav as Lucknow-Azamgarh-Ballia Expressway in May 2015.[citation needed] Later, route was changed to Lucknow-Azamgarh-Ghazipur by the Yogi Adityanath government, and upon acquisition of around 95% of required land, foundation stone of Purvanchal Expressway was laid on 14 July 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With a total project value of ₹22,494 crore, including the land acquisition cost, the expressway upon completion will be India’s longest expressway.

The expressway is to be linked with Varanasi–Azamgarh highway through a separate link road. UPEIDA is also constructing the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, which will connect Jaitpur village in Gorakhpur district with Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur village in Azamgarh district. Upon the completion of 17 km long, 4-lane wide Buxar–Ghazipur Elevated Road (Bharauli in Buxar to Haydaria in Ghazipur), Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh will be directly connected to Arrah and Patna in Bihar by Purvanchal Expressway and NH-922.

Trial of landing was done on Purvanchal Expressway with a C130, AN32 and Tejas fighter aircraft landing on the emergency runway.

Re: Air Force C-130J Transport Aircraft lands on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway

What are they trying to do here? Save the cost of having an entourage from the civil airport to the highway(place of inauguration) ? I can understand the odd field trial to prove a technical aspect for the military in case of a war emergency. Beyond that , doing this over and over again just doesn't make sense. Why stress out our military personnel beyond what is strictly required for training and validating capabilities ?

It will only make our country a laughing stock in international circles.
