Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

On Thursday, Virgin Hyperloop One signed a pact with the Pune development authority to undertake a preliminary study on hyperloop routes between Mumbai and Pune. A hyperloop (high-speed movement in ‘pods’ through a pressurised tube, using magnetic levitation) between India’s financial capital and Pune city could bring down the 2-3 hour commute to a mere 14 minutes!

What a wonderful news. Lets wait and watch if it actually becomes a reality and when.

Damn somebody get these guys to Bangalore. We need a couple of them
1) K.R Puram to ITPL
2)Koramangala to Electronic City (Cutting through the notorious Silk Board Junction)

Mumbai to Pune in 14 minutes may soon become a reality!

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, entire project seems un viable or may be a scam even.

1. It is basically a maglev inside a vacuum tube. We all know it is twice as expensive to make a maglev as the entire track needs to be lined with electromagnets to maintain levitation. Think copper and iron, Mumbai to Pune.

2. We need to create vacuum through out the entire tube. Compressors and fans to draw out air. Power consumption.?

3. Not sure how powerful the vacuum is but in case of a de pressurization of cabin how fast can the pressure be brought back up. In an air craft at cruising altitude the atmospheric pressure is low, not a vacuum, and the plane can be brought back to normal pressurized zone by diving the aircraft under 10000 feet within seconds.

4. Owing to the cost mag legs world over are just a show piece projects connecting airport to city center but not a viable mass transport solution. This one is a maglev+gas tight tube (over ground and under ground)

5. Also not sure how people will react traveling in tubes with no windows. This is a trivial matter but persons with some medical condition like epilepsy and claustrophobia, matters may be aggravated. (The doctors on this forum kindly comment)

I feel this is a ploy to discredit the Shinkansen project.

If any thing, Maharashtra should be tying up with the Japanese for this line so we can have commonality of parts and trains. It is a completely proven tech.

These can be covered with metro services itself, if those are properly planned.

What Hyperloop could do instead - is to make the satellite cities around Bangalore more accessible and hence allowing people to still continue to work in Bangalore- but stay far at places like Mysore, Mangalore etc. Now that would be something!

I feel this is just a publicity stunt. It is usual in Maharashtra to propose such outlandish projects which never see the light of the day. Moreover hyperloop isn’t even a proven technology

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

Virgin Hyperloop One enters into framework agreement with Maharashtra Govt to commercialize operation.

Come 2024, Mumbai Pune travel time to come down to 14-25 mins.

Quote:
The key investors of Hyperloop One, including Branson are Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, CEO and Group Chairman of DP World, and Ziyavudin Magomedov, Chairman of Summa Group.
Quote:
India may well be the first market for Hyperloop One and will debut even before Middle East, Northern Europe or United States of America, where Hyperloop One is considering rolling out its service.

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

This project still seems like more of a fantasy than something which will see the light of the day, for one the test track (which is coincidentally the only functional facility, with no commercially proven examples yet) is in the Nevada desert where land availability or a gradient is not an issue.

Mumbai to Pune on the other has a whole mountain range that has to be accounted for and availability of land is a major hurdle

What does this "signing the pact" mean?
Is it any obligation from either (or both parties) to deliver something?

AP CM Chandrababu Naidu leads the way:

Already under discussion here:

On a funny note, I guess, political parties (and people) opposing bullet trains are yet to know what a Hyper loop is, hence no hue and cry yet.

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

I dont think the bullet train or the Hyperloop will ever see the light of the day. The feasibility of these technologies is highly questionable. Especially in case of hyperloop, the whole technological requirements like Vacuum is very very difficult to implement and maintain, especially in a sector like Mumbai Pune where the weather factors are fairly strong (Heat + Rain)

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

Similar to this project, there is a pod taxi project planned in delhi-ncr region. Every few months some sort of feasibility study or award of contract news keeps coming in, but no action on ground or files level takes place. Such projects are a sort of image projectors for ruling governments but then thrown out of window by the next government as commercially nonviable, or by giving some other excuse.

I wonder what G forces are we talking here with a 14 minute journey time between PNQ-MUM. I assume it will be in 3 digits. Imagine somebody with a medical condition taking these G forces, unthinkable.

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

Call me a skeptic, but when the Hyperloop has not been proven to be scientifically and economically feasible yet, signing a MoU is nothing but an eyewash. I remember reading about ropeways to cure traffic jams and high speed waterways to improve connectivity in Mumbai and some other metros. Even now, our local trains have no toilets and traveling in one is perilous. If even 10% of the effort these bureaucrats put in bringing together such glamourous but unrealistic news snippets was put in making the local trains safer and better, people would be happier.

Re: Rumour: Virgin Hyperloop could bring Mumbai - Pune travel time down to 14 minutes

Another ploy to increase land rates saying that the hyperloop "will pass just from here". People will fall for it, buy the land and then the project gets scrapped or never sees the light of the day. The numerous airports, or should I say, the numerous proposed sites for the airport in Mumbai/Pune are a living example. Thankfully though, the one in New Mumbai did kick off for now. All the while, few locals and the politicos made a lot of money by saying the "new airport" would be just 5 mins from here and this "5 mins from here" was applicable to almost all the land in the vicinity.

Let me be extremely optimistic and say this does go through, 15 mins will never happen because they will put in number of stops in between which will cause a time delay. Adding to it, the prices for real estate in Pune will blow through the roof if this does happen
