Jet Airways introduces Boeing 737 in Audi #A5BratPack livery

Audi India has partnered with Jet Airways to promote its latest A5 range. As part of this promotional campaign, Jet Airways has introduced a Boeing 737 airplane sporting the #A5BratPack livery. The livery features all three models of the new A5 range - A5 Sportback, A5 Cabriolet and the S5 Sportback.

The new A5 range was launched in India back in October 2017 with prices starting at Rs. 54.02 lakh for the A5 Sportback. The S5 Sportback costs Rs. 70.60 lakh while the A5 Cabriolet is priced at Rs. 67.51 lakh (ex-showroom).
The new A5 range features revised exterior styling with more pronounced creases and a new front fascia. The design incorporates a larger grille with twin-pod LED headlights on either side. The rear gets tweaked LED tail lights with dynamic indicators. The Sportback models have a familiar four-door coupe-like side profile. Other the other hand, the A5 Cabriolet comes with a fabric top that folds away in 15 seconds.

Audi also updated the interiors with a new dashboard featuring an 8.3-inch Audi MMI touchscreen in the centre. The traditional dials have been replaced with Audi Virtual Cockpit - a 12.3-inch TFT display. All the A5 models get a 3-spoke, multi-functional steering wheel with paddle shifters.

The base A5 Sportback and A5 Cabriolet share the same 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine. It produces 187 BHP and 400 Nm of torque and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The S5 Sportback is powered by a 3.0-litre, turbocharged V6 petrol engine that makes 349 BHP and 500 Nm of torque and comes equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Doesnt it cost a fortune for something like this ? On another note, it is bad enough to see buses displaying ugly ads on their side, and now this. But atleast these wont be seen everyday by most people.

I'm surprised Jet is doing this; I don't think there are many full-service carriers across the world that use their aircrafts for advertising.
(Emirates/Etihad often do when their hub city is hosting a global event)

It does make sense though; Audi would expect their target audience to prefer full-service carriers over budget airlines. Purely from a perception standpoint. On one side, BMW has tied up with Bangalore Airport to have BMW vehicles ferry VIPs; on the other, Audi is advertising on the plane itself.

Given the immense jump in flyers in India, both first-time and repeat, airports and aircrafts are a very visible and impactful avenue of advertising. Must help quite a bit on the bottom-line given the economics of the industry.

Painting the airplane does; but very likely, this is just a sticker job. Which shouldn't cost that much.

This is actually a sticker/wrap job..if you notice the original lines of the Jet livery remain perfectly intact underneath the Audi livery.

I am not referring to the physical image. How much paint would it cost anyway ?

The cost of painting would be around $100,000 with all the art work and accuracy and proportion. The cost with stickers is about $25,000.

Interesting! This make sense as many of the potential Audi A5 customers could be frequent flyers as well.

OT: The last time I saw something similar was on Air Asia flights with Kabali movie advt.

$25k would be like 1-2 cars worth sales ( depending on model). But is this just physical cost - or would it include the payout to Jet for the adverstising ?

Still, how many conversions would happen ? What will be the ROI on this ?

Also, has this been tried earlier by anyone, incl Audi ? What was the ROI ?

Extra layer of painting or stickering results in atmospheric drag, and hence lower fuel economy - isn't that right? After all, lots of wind tunnel testing is done to achieve perfect air flow across the fuselage.

Jet Airways might have instructed the pilots to do more "coasting" and not revv the engines too much to save on fuel

The paint work does not add to the drag though paint does add to the weight. A proper paint job on a 737 would weight about 100 kilos. On a 747 about 300 kilos. A well polished paint job would help with drag reduction as would just a clear coat of polish on a bare metal fuselage.

This is the actual job for painting or sticking. Fees for advertisement would be in addition. To this may be added the cost of downtime and revenue loss of 4 days for sticking or 9 days for painting. The challenge with painting or sticking figures of cars or faces is the need for the figure to look normal when actually it is stuck/painted on a curved surface. The stickers are made in 1 metre x 2 metre pieces on a printer and then stuck on.

Remember the Kabali movie promotion on the Air Asia Airbus. I guess this was the first promotion on an aircrafts's exterior in India.

On a Malaysian owned airline too. However Rajini is very popular in places like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan.

Jet going with Audi is probably opening up new ways to advertise. I dread the day I see some Chat masala or curry powder ads on the planes though. Could happen!

Pocket change for a brand like Audi. TV, print, online & radio ads are done to death. They're always looking for new avenues to promote their brand / cars.

Then, there's also the additional publicity from threads (like this) and news articles on the same.

With airlines, everything has a price . They are so focussed on the bottomline - just see how cattle class seems to go from bad to worse.

excellent point man.

Luxury brands don't look at conversions in initiatives like these, which are all part of 'brand building'. After all, its because of brand 'Audi' that people pay such a premium for their cars. Takes decades & centuries to build a luxury brand like Audi, BMW & Mercedes. In the recent past, only Lexus has come out of nowhere & established itself, but even that is in select countries only.

Im not surprised if this is to earn revenue. Reliable sources say Jet Airways isn't making too much money these days.
