Eicher launches 7-speed gearbox on medium duty trucks

Eicher has introduced a new 7-speed transmission on its medium duty trucks. Initially, the 7-speed gearbox will be offered on the Eicher Pro 3015 and Eicher Pro 1114XP models.

The Pro 3015 and Pro 1114XP are powered by the same E494, 4-cylinder diesel engine, which produces 135 BHP @ 2,600 rpm and 450 Nm of torque @ 1,200-1,800 rpm. The old 6-speed transmission has now been replaced with a 7-speed unit with 7 forward and 1 reverse ratios. According to the company, the new gearbox is expected to improve driveability and fuel economy. Eicher claims that it enables the truck to operate at a higher torque range and eliminates the need to repeatedly shift between gears.

The Eicher Pro 1114XP is offered in three wheelbase options and has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 15.36 tonnes. The Pro 3015 is part of the 3000 Series and has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 15.70 tonnes. It comes in 2 wheelbase options with cargo bay lengths varying between 19 ft and 24 ft.

Will make a big difference in trucks because of how much time they spend on the highway. 7th gear = taller gear = lower cruising rpm = higher fuel economy = longer tank range (lesser fuel pitstops) + longer engine life. Plus, with Indian highways continuously improving, they'll be able to use 7th gear for longer durations. 10 years back, I didn't use the 6th gear of my C220 as much as I do the 8th gear of my 530d today.

Having a 7th gear will also allow Eicher engineers to tune the 1st - 6th gears better. Related discussion.

Now what trucks should have having as a variant in all their range is an AMT transmission, world over this has already taken the trend, even the BOSS series from Ashok Leyland has an Automatic variant which has air conditioning too.

Further more, we should start moving towards a sleeper cab version of all these trucks with brilliant facilities for the driver as they do in western countries.

Check out the VNL version of the Volvo Globetrotters, amazing marvels those.

Re: Eicher launches 7-speed gearbox on medium duty trucks

Eicher needed it. The narrow torque band in the eicher 4 cylinder led to lot of down shifting after a slight drops in speed, after that it was rev above 2500rpm in a lower gear, and upshift getting rpm below 1600 barely in the torque band.
With a closer ratioed 7 speed transmission this issue will be solved.
