Trucks for a construction site - recommendations needed

I am a noob in this area and so I am here to seek the help from the experts of commercial vehicles.

My brother has a construction/contracting company and he needs to purchase 5 truck chassis for 3 transit millers and 2 tippers (hywa).

Based on his budget and available information, he has shortlisted the below models -

1. Tata Models- LPK2518/2518HD/2518 9S HYLIFE/ 2518 HS 9S HYLIHE/ 2523 /2523 HD 9S
2. Tata Prima Models- 2528k/2523k/2525k
3. Ashok Leyland- 2581hd/ Captain 2518/ Captain2523hr
4. AMW- 2518TP/ 2518 TP with BC/ 2518 TP with Crowl/ 2523 Box Body/ 2523 Rock Body/ 2528TP
5. BHARAT BENZ- 2523C/2528C/2528CM
6. Mahindra - Blazo 25/ Blazo 6S

His main priorities are of course -
  • Fuel Efficiency and low cost of ownership
  • Low maintenance costs and quick service support
  • Durability and Reliability
The trucks would mostly be used in South India - Karnataka, Kerala, etc.

I need your suggestions on what would be the apt model for the above requirements. If you have any other models in mind which is better suited, please pour in your suggestions.

I can suggest for Tata tippers. They are designed to be used in overload conditions and can bear the stress. The FE and maintenance is also on the better side.

If your brother has a budget for Prima models then it is certainly ahead of the others.
LPK 2518HD has a bogie suspension and is more effective in mining areas. The same goes for 9S.

As tippers are used on hourly basis rather than distance, their FE should not be the deciding factor. The main area to view is the wear and tear.

Now the new axle weight regulation has kicked in and the payload capacity has been increased by around 5T.

As the tippers will be used mainly in South India, the presence of AL and BB is very prominent. It will help in service. So, decide accordingly.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation.

We have now shortlisted Tata, AL and BB.

TATA as you mentioned is economical and rugged as per their brochure claims. The TATA representative suggested the LPK 2523 for our usage with 227 bhp, 6 speed gearbox, EGR tech, 4 years warranty and on site service.

Since the intended use is in South India, almost everyone is recommending me AL or BB.

BB is relatively a newer entrant and although it seems to be a popular choice, some say that the vehicle is too technologically advanced to be abused in construction sites. They also cost a little more and is only available with a 9 speed gearbox. It comes with a 235 bhp engine.

AL is tried and tested, spares and service is easily available and economical. Even though AL has the option of 9 speed gearbox, we think a 6 speed will be sufficient since the vehicle may barely be used on open roads, let alone highways. We were given the option for Captain 2518, which is priced at a slight premium over TATA.

Re: Trucks for a construction site - recommendations needed

9-speed gearbox is better suited for the mining and quarry applications because of the availability of the two crawler C1,C2 gears along with the closely spaced gear ratios for managing starting at steep inclines from the stand still under heavily loaded conditions and picking up the momentum easily.

Go for the 9-speed AL instead. Else BB, if you want the drivers to have a comfortable cabin.
