Default Volvo Trucks: Vera, the future of autonomous transportation

Vera combines the benefits of three big technological areas – automation, connectivity and electromobility – to create optimal flows in transportation and logistical operations.

Press release:

Quote:
Our system can be seen as an extension of the advanced logistics solutions that many industries already apply today. Since we use autonomous vehicles with no exhaust emissions and low noise, their operation can take place at any time of day or night.” “The solution utilizes existing road infrastructure and load carriers, making it easier to recoup costs and allowing for integration with existing operations

Volvo Vera Electric Autonomous Hauler Hits The Road In Sweden.

Quote:
Part of the first pre-defined route between a logistics center and a port terminal is a public road.

This month Volvo Trucks launched the first pilot assignment of the all-electric, autonomous Vera hauler, which transport goods from a logistics center to a port terminal in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The project was launched in partnership with the ferry and logistics company DFDS with a purpose to develop and test the technology.

Currently, Vera is able to drive on pre-defined routes, partially on public roads and partially in an industrial area. The speed limit is 40 km/h (25 mph).

Thank you for sharing this and educating us all on what is coming. Certainly very interesting from a technology point of view. The autonomous piece makes sense in Europe and other developed nations facing a manpower shortage and an ageing population. For places like South Asia and Africa we need tech that does not displace the human as that is sowing the seeds, already, of a wide socio-economic problem. Nevertheless most interesting.
