Maruti Suzuki opens its 250th CV showroom

Maruti Suzuki has launched its 250th commercial vehicle (CV) showroom in India. The new dealership is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. With the launch of the new showroom, Maruti's commercial retail channel now has presence in 193 cities.

Maruti sells the Super Carry through its commercial channel. The light commercial vehicle (LCV) is powered by a 793cc, 2-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that produces 32 BHP @ 3,500 rpm and 75 Nm of torque @ 2,000 rpm. Maruti also offers a CNG variant of the Super Carry. It is powered by a 1.2-litre, fuel-injected engine that puts out 64 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 85 Nm @ 3,000 rpm. Both engines are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

According to Maruti Suzuki, 20,000 Super Carry LCVs were sold in the first 24 months of its launch. The first 10,000 units were sold in 18 months, while the next 10,000 units were dispatched in just over 6 months.

I know these outlets are small (as is evident in the pic), but still - 250 sales outlets is pretty good for a division that only has 1 vehicle on sale. Some manufacturers have 5+ models and still not anywhere close to 200 showrooms.

20,000 units is like a rounding off error for Maruti. It's a pittance. Wondering if these 250 outlets are even breaking even? Who is paying the bills? What future products is Maruti bringing here in the short & mid-term? Will the Eeco be moved here?

All the dealers of this commercial business are the same ones who have been with Maruti for atleast 10 plus years. Hence opening a small outlet on the outskirts of the city won't be such a daunting task for them. From whatever I have seen, most of these dealers own a plot or two as Vehicle yards. They simply open an outlet next to it for this CV segment. Infact, Maruti is preferring existing dealers to expand most of its ideas as they hardly resist for anything new. I have been closely monitoring spares and MASS business, and people there are mostly reluctant to implement any new idea proposed by MSIL, given the tiny margins they operate in.

Dealers on the other hand are always more than happy to venture into any plan proposed by MSIL. Hence they are being preferred over new faces.

Not advocating unsafe vehicles here, but Maruti can potentially move its Omni, Eeco and all its Tour series of vehicles to these showrooms. Omni easily sells above 6k units per month, without any kind of push. From business point of view, both for Maruti as well as end customer(which are mostly commercial anyways), this can be a viable option instead of killing the model altogether.

BVNCAP won't be applied to CV segment IMO(else what happens to all those 3 wheelers which are much more unsafe than Omni).

Also, this will promote the Tour lineup about which, not many people know about.

Shashi

Re: Maruti Suzuki opens its 250th CV showroom

Sharing some sales numbers of the Super Carry.

June 2019 = 2,017 (June 2018 = 1626)

April - June 2019 quarter = 6568 (same for 2018 was 4873)

Total sales for April 2018 - March 2019 = 23,874

Let's see how it does once the diesel variant is discontinued (as the rumour mills insist).
