New Delhi: Commercial vehicle manufacturer, Ashok Leyland on Wednesday has bagged an order from TN STU (Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings) for 1750 buses. Speaking about this order, Anuj Kathuria, COO, Ashok Leyland said, "We are very happy to receive the confirmation of this order from TN STU. Our ability to bring value, combined with our superior technology and innovation will help us maintain our leadership position in buses in India."

Sanjay Saraswat, President - MHCV, Ashok Leyland said, "With this order, our orderbook for State Transport Undertakings has enhanced significantly. This is a testament to the reliability, durability and robustness of our buses. The cost of ownership and the product experience which we can deliver is the best in the industry."

Successive TN governments have always purchased AL buses for several decades. Tata buses are a rarity in government fleets. Probably because their factory is in Chennai.

TN is Ashok Leyland country. Spotting a TATA or Eicher bus are difficult, especially if they are Govt buses.

Heck, even the low floor Volvo buses are not to be seen on Chennai roads now and I don't think they have placed any orders after the first lot.

The first lot of Vovo buses purchased earlier have almost been scrapped! They are not placing fresh orders, at least not as of now.

We can see many private Tata, Bharat Benz and Eicher buses. Very rare among Government buses. The only Tata buses bought in recent times were for the "Small Bus" fleet of the MTC.

There are TML buses inducted into the fleet of late albeit in small numbers. The TN transport corporations are comfortable using AL buses. The premium coaches though offer superior comfort and are more reliable, they come at a price - acquisition and maintenance. These corporations focus more on providing affordable travel options to the masses rather than going after the glitz.

Re: Ashok Leyland bags order for 1750 buses from Tamil Nadu State Transport

Recently when the TN Govt acquired a couple of Ashok Leyland electric buses, they went the lease-it-out way instead of buying it outright. It was a very good move as the onus of maintenance is on the experts, while the transport corporation can ensure it is running a bus in perfect condition.
We should have taken the same approach with Volvo too. May be that's in the pipeline!

For the regular buses, it makes sense to continue with Ashok Leyland (instead of having a mix of Tata and Eicher) since the buses are serviced by the transport corporation, and they would have enough spares or be able to swap components between buses to keep the fleet up and running.

I believe new AC buses are built for MTC, based on AL chassis. I think TNSTC/MTC never bought Eicher at any point of time while Tatas at the hand of MTC/TNSTC don't last long as ALs do.

Re: Ashok Leyland bags order for 1750 buses from Tamil Nadu State Transport

Majority of the buses with TNSTUs are AshLey and they also have TATAs(could be 15-20%). SETC is the only TNSTU which doesn't have a TATA. They had few before few decades and not now. Similarly Virudhunagar and Dindigul regions of TNSTC-Madurai doesn't have any TATA buses with them and rest all regions have TATA buses. No Eicher with TNSTUs.

In the recent tender, AL bagged 1750 buses and TML bagged 250 buses. This is a mix of Non AC and AC buses and includes buses for city(AC, Non AC) operations.

MTC had 130 Volvos earlier. 30 Volvos were purchased with state govt funds and 100 Volvos were purchased with TN+JNNURM funds. All those are scrapped now.
