Amazon India to add 10,000 electric vehicles into its delivery fleet by 2025

In a statement, the company said its commitment to electric mobility comes after running successful pilots in several cities last year and will have its electric fleet operating in 20 cities across the country, including Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Hyderabad within the year.

Amazon said that its 10,000 EV inductions in India would be in addition to the 100,000 EVs the company said it would induct into its fleet globally by 2030.
Quote:
Amazon India has made a commitment to induct 10,000 electric vehicles (EV) into its delivery fleet by 2025, which is part of the company’s efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of its operations in the country.

“At Amazon India, we are committed to building a supply chain that will minimize the environmental impact of our operations,” said Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfillment - APAC & Emerging Markets, Amazon. “We will continue to invest in the electrification of our delivery fleet, thereby reducing our dependence on non-renewable resources.”

An Amazon India spokesperson told ET that for its current electric fleet the company has worked with smaller OEMs but is in talks with all the large manufacturers in the space. The company will induct both three and four-wheeler EVs in the country which will be designed and manufactured in India.

Currently, Mahindra & Mahindra is the only large auto manufacturer that sells electric three-wheelers as part of its Treo range and also sells its eSupro electric cargo van. Tata Motors is the other large Indian OEM to be in the electric commercial vehicle space, but doesn’t currently sell its Electric Ace in India.

“...the government’s focus to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, and steps towards setting up of charging infrastructure with the FAME 2 policy has helped the company accelerate and chart its vision for EVs in India,” Amazon India’s statement read.

Amazon’s plan to induct EVs into its delivery fleet is part of the company’s five year plan that includes creating 1 million new direct and indirect jobs and exporting goods worth $10 billion from small and medium businesses and manufacturers in India. The announcements came on the back of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ visit to India last week.

Amazon has launched a fleet of electric delivery vehicles. In 2020, these vehicles will operate in more than 20 cities including Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Nagpur and Coimbatore.

The electric delivery fleet will include 3-wheelers as well as 4-wheelers. Amazon claims that they have been working with OEMs in India to develop and build these vehicles.

Amazon plans to launch 10,000 electric delivery vehicles in India by 2025. They also aim to have a fleet of 1,00,000 electric vehicles globally by 2030. By 2030, Amazon expects to save 4 million metric tons of carbon per year by using electric delivery vehicles.

Sound first step in the right direction. They are notorious for skinning alive their vendors / suppliers but at least here they are doing the right thing. Given the way they work I can believe them when they say they'll reach 10,000 EVs in India by 2025.

Only I wonder why they couldn't not have been designed better. Even 30 year old Bajaj Auto rickshas look less crude. Any idea who is the supplier?

Re: Amazon launches electric delivery vehicle fleet

Its not cruder, its just industrial design. I suspect its more robust than incumbent three-wheelers just looking at the wheel diameter and width. But 10,000 by 2025, not very impressed; this is starting to look like a green wash at that point.

Really want this segment to go electric as soon as possible, these rickshaws mostly use ancient engines from the 30s i guess and the noise they make and super slow speeds they do is just astonishing for 2020, glad someone is making a start.

But the main challenge will be the range and the charging time as these delivery vehicles ply for the entire day, even if it within the city. It will be interesting to see how they are going to address this.

Re: Amazon launches electric delivery vehicle fleet

BigBasket too has started adding electric vehicles to its fleet. I have in fact seen these electric delivery vehicles on the roads in Bellandur, Bangalore.

As per this Inc42 article, it states that BigBasket has worked with Euler Motors based in Delhi and Gayam Motor Works (GMW) based in Hyderabad for these electric delivery vehicles.

The vehicles don't run the entire city in one shot. All deliveries are made in 2-3 shifts by the delivery centre. So the vehicles would return to the base atleast thrice in a day - and probably they'd have a turn-around time of atleast an hour or two. Provided they have a quick charge facility, that should be enough to top-up the battery. And such bigger vehicles generally go to areas where there are too many packages, but generally to only few addresses (mostly to companies or apartments). SO the vehicle wouldn't run around a lot as well.
