I liked the fact that they didn't invent a new brand name for this even though Winger is not exactly a successful model. The original winger never could compete against the Traveller. But this looks like it has potential. This can be a great replacement for the entry level smallest wheelbase Traveller.

re: All-new Tata Winger showcased at Auto Expo 2020

My only grouse is that Force Motors moved to the T1N platform and gave Dual Airbags and other safety features, while Tata Motors just redesigned the front for Crash Test and Pedestrian Compliance and didn't even provide a Driver side Airbag.

Safety is one of the main component of Impact Design 2.0 and they missed a huge opportunity to provide it in the new 2020 Winger. It has better interiors for Driver comfort, but don't know how the lower models will look and be in person.

They should bring back a Winger Platinum for the private buyers with that 7 seater layout and add in Airbags etc. also to suit their needs, along with 3 Point ELR Seatbelts on all side seats.

re: All-new Tata Winger showcased at Auto Expo 2020

Force did a Mercedes Sprinter and Tata did a Force Traveller with this one Look at how half baked this product is. On one side, you have a futuristic front end that will make the Force run for cover, and then move inside and you have that gear lever lifted out of a 1990s truck. Give a piano finish infotainment console and just below that, a set of AC vents from the 90s again which is positioned in a very unwelcome position if you know what I'm talking about Come to the rear and you have those doors which resemble the main door of a temple. What exactly do they move out of this door? This concept of a huge door was introduced in the Ambulance version of the earlier winger - Totally makes sense considering we need to move in stretchers and the people around the stretchers. But why, oh why on this version?

re: All-new Tata Winger showcased at Auto Expo 2020

When I first saw the Winger from a distance in the live video, was excited that Tata has maybe done a generational change. Have been seeing different generations of the Renault Trafic being tested by Tata over the years.

Big disappointment

Just a new face and new dashboard.
It is not even the basic body style or shape that is the problem. The underpinnings won't work here.

Tata should rather take a previous gen Hiace or Urvan if they can't develop one of their own.

Well, would like to be proved wrong. Maybe Tata did an Aria/Hexa on the Winger

What engine is powering the BS6 engine? Winger had the 2.2L DICOR previously. If Tata has managed a BS6 version of it, then clearly a BS6 Hexa is not far away. (The 2.2 Varicor powers the Hexa)

The old Winger could seat fewer people, right? Like maybe 8 or 9?

The new 2020 Winger shown here looks more like a Traveller in seat capacity, meaning like 13-14?

And then add to that the larger size, meaning larger weight.

Given all that, can the same engine as in the old Winger pull the new Winger?

The Force Traveller has a pretty good engine as I recall. If Tata is serious about competing with this, they'd need to plonk in a pretty good engine and transmission.

I welcome Tata trying to compete with the Traveller. I'd also like to see it come up with a competent product that can seriously compete with the Bolero. Bolero is just running unmatched without any serious competition and bringing in tons of moolah for Mahindra. Just look at its sales figures month after month for years together.

The FM 2.6 CR engine offered in Traveller which could seat 17 + driver was a 90 hp one. So yeah the same engine as offered in the old winger (100hp) can potentially pull the new winger.

The gearbox and the torque delivery characteristics of that engine do the trick for the Traveller. Even though it is only 90 hp, the way it accelerates makes it one of the most rashly driven vehicles in Kerala. And it climbs well too without having to revv much. I don't think Winger 100 hp has those characteristics provided it is based on the Dicor block which is known to have significant turbo lag.

My thoughts exactly. I've never seen a Tata Winger (nor for that matter any vehicles belonging to the Safari/Storme or Indica families) ever accelerate aggressively. Whereas a Force Traveller is almost always seen driven aggressively. I'm sure the engine pulling power/pickup characteristics of the vehicle play a role in encouraging such a driving style. Its too much of a coincidence to accept that Winger drivers are all sedate drivers, whereas Traveller drivers are all aggressive drivers, for the past 5-7 years!

Re: All-new Tata Winger showcased at Auto Expo 2020

Fantastic looks! No doubt about that.

However - I think the commercial people van segment also needs to be careful about long term ownership and maintenance costs. The more the detailing & good looking bits on the vehicle, more will be replacement/repair costs in case of usual traffic fender benders that these vans frequently suffer in our road conditions.

I think that's where the Traveler scores a lot. Its very simplistic in design. No flamboyance. broken bits / lights etc can be easily replaced anywhere. If Tata can get that supply chain & pricing right for the long term ownership, then Winger has a chance in a size requirement just below the Traveler or thereabout.

Don't get me wrong but doesn't the new Winger design resemble to MS Stingray?

There were other variants seating 13 to 14 people too, I think.
