New Delhi: India’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp on Tuesday introduced its concept vehicle Quark 1, termed as the world’s first class changing vehicle as part of its project, Hero Hatch Electric Modular Mobility.

The product can be used interchangeably as both, a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler, for personal and commercial operations including e-commerce and deliveries, for category L5 of three-wheeler and L2 of two-wheeler, under Motor Vehicles Act.

Powered by M360 and AMSEP (Advanced Modular Scalable Electric Powertrain) technology, the concept has an interchange mechanism with retractable rear wheel.

Designed with an aim to reduce vehicle density, Hero said that the concept was derived from the age-old practice of using horses for multiple services, which conceptualized into the idea of using vehicles for multi-utility solutions today.

The vehicle comes with technologies like live monitoring of battery SOC, customizable user profiles, GPS and provides access to OTA (over the air) updates and monitoring across the vehicle.

Interesting idea.
Unfortunately no pics to show how it looks as a two wheeler.
3W version has 2 wheels at the back. On 2 wheels how does one balance? Does the body transform as well? Is the extra wheel taken out or retracted?
So many questions. Pics would have definitely helped understand the concept better.

Do our RTOs support registering the same vehicle under CV and PV category at the same time? Or will it have two different registrations? Hero and the industry will have to work with the government to iron out these issues as they get closer to a production variant.

Never the less, I feel auto industry is on the cusp of making sci-fi into reality. Whether it be EVs, self driving cars, flying cars, shape changing automobiles - it is a very interesting time for urban mobility solutions. I am hoping to see a lot of these going mainstream within this lifetime.

The first thing which came to my mind seeing this was 'Transformers'. On one instance is a truck and then it becomes a giant robot! Same here, going as a bike then becomes a rickshaw. But I do wonder about the electric drivetrain. Will it be too powerful as a motorbike or less powerful as a rickshaw. Also it would be cumbersome to keep the 3-wheeler parts, while driving the 2-wheeler. Probably they won't be changeable on the fly. But, definitely an interesting concept. :thumbs up
